Shocky you hit that one on the nail. That's where the common sense comes in. You can by all means slow down and let the vehicle in but when there's a line of vehicles waiting to merge and you can't move over I would suggest that you maintain your speed. You can move over if you can but in California you better get back over as soon as you can before CHP thinks you're traveling in that lane.

I drove for a company that has deep pockets and there have been many attempts to run insurance scams on us. That's why the company comes out and talks to us drivers about situations just like this. And tells us the law. I was lucky and didn't have to drive a gasoline tanker in Los Angeles like many of my co-workers have. In Las Vegas I stayed in the middle lane as much as possible which I believe with a three lane highway is much safer.

    Finger nail?
    OUCH? :biggrin_25525:
    Man-0-MaN!
    You got THAT right.

Once, in Central California, I saw a Big truck about to merge from a very short on ramp, and I moved over to let the driver in --- and he sped up just enough to hang me out to dry in the number one lane of a two lane highway.

The CHP ran down the left shoulder of the highway and yelled in his PA system for me to get the HaiL over.
    YeAH!
    Right.
With bumper to bumper Big truck traffic now in the lane to my right, and my turn indicators flashin' --- not ONE of those Big truck truck steering wheel holders would even consider givin' me a break.

I was already doin' the speed limit (55 MPH) so speedin' up wasn't an option. All I could do was back out of it, causing even MORE drivers to try passin' me on the right and NOT letting me over.
SOME daze, it just doesn't pay to be me. :biggrin_25512:

I have mixed feelings about runnin' the middle lane.
When impatient drivers behind me attempt to pass me on the left AND the right side --- at the SAME time --- and NEITHER of them is aware of the other, as they race to get in front of me, --- then attempt a quicky lane change into the middle lane right in front of me --- almost crashin' into each other --- it has a pretty high pucker factor for all involved.

If they were to meet, suddenly, I probably wouldn't be able to avoid collecting one of them, if not BOTH of them.

What I really appreciate are places like Reno on Hwy 395 ----
    Through Traffic Use LEFT Lane.

Which, in MY opinion, makes perfect sense.
Unlike California restricting Big trucks to where they're in the way, and runnin' slower --- by LAW.

The CHP made a remark a few years ago when the split speed limits were being reviewed ----
We're tired of cleaning up the carnage created by the split speed limits.

Pretty much sums it all up, I think.
