I was dispatched by my company to pick up a flatbed trailer ( to drive it 100+ miles to our terminal)

When I arrived at the jobsite, I learned that the trailer was involved in an accident and had a cracked axle.

The tires were removed from the front axle and the axle was chained to the rub rail of the trailer.

When I told my DM that I was uncomfortable pulling it, he got really mad and continued pressuring me to do it.

After an hour of researching and calling other drivers I decided this was not safe and not worth getting a DOT violation.

My company is still very mad at me for refusing to pull the trailer.

    Thoughts?

That trailer is not in drivable condition even if the front axle is chained to the rub rail

How can you say that? It is perfectly legal to ride with an axel chained up. Plus he didn’t give enough other info on the condition of the rest of the trailer.

As long as it was empty or even lightly loaded it would have been legal imo no different than a lift axle in the laws eyes. Thats assuming the frame had damage.

Sounds like a company I drove for,I picked up one of their van trailers it was in real bad shape but I hauled it back to the yard in Iowa from Oklahoma. As long as your not hauling anything your fine. The rear axle was busted on this trailer and chained up.

I don't think there is a problem, theoretically you could haul that empty deck on one trailer tire... (Not that you would want to...)

Ive pulled many equiptment that has been... effed with beyond reason, coming out onto the highway as a rolling freakshow of mechanical work arounds. DOT never cared.

its common practice for mechanics to chain up an axle to bring equipment in for repairs
