I will leave the others responses alone above yours but I do want respond to this one.
The OP came on this board and asked a question not for a tongue lashing, which he got. I never said I didnt agree with what you said, I disagreed with the way you said it.
I have learned way more here than I ever expected to and its the veterans posts/advice that helped me to score 100% on my inner/outer inspection, 5 point break test, 6 point break test (DMV added the 6th and required we do it over), skills test (forward/back, reverse offset and blindside parallel) and the road test. I was at the DMV when I made the first post getting my Double/triples and tanker endorsements which I also scored 100% on. I have been a sponge since October of last year soaking up any piece of information I could about this industry. I just completed 7 weeks (8 hours a day) of schooling and am heading off on Saturday for my orientation. Im not getting in to this career just for the money or because I didnt have a backup plan, Im getting in to this industry because I want to drive. Think of me what you will, its no skin off my balls.

Nah I dont think so like you I have a extensive driving background 22 yrs and yes I definitely am not accident free but in the ones I have been in and those everday close calls I have yet to see or been in a accident that occurred with a vehicle following to close while traveling the same direction at the same speed. Now im not saying it doesnt happen however it's not as common as one would think most accidents involving the same direction and speed occur from distractions from drivers .Do I tailgate? Sometimes but not everday yes my family is important to me but what would be more prudent would be if drivers would set there distractions aside and concentrate on the road....123456 Thanks this. -
i only get speeding tickets, never been ticketed for tailgating.. do i do it??? i guess you can say i do it. alot of the times it's necessary to facilitate traffic flow. people get into the left lane and just sit there with no intentions to overtake the next vehicle. people get into their own little zone and forget that there's hundreds of other vehicles trying to get somewhere (hospital, school). usually as soon as you get behind them they zone back to the road and move along.. the reason i asked how long you have to ride someone isn't for one of those instances when i'm trying to get someones attention off of their phone and back on the road, but when i'm putting along in the right hand lane and some one decides to take advantage of the buffer zone i've left between me and the truck in front. -
There will always be distractions as long as car makers keep putting gadgets in new cars. I personally think that phones should have an accelerometer and once you hit a certain speed it disables the texting function and re-routes incoming phone calls to bluetooth or something similar installed in the car.Ghost Ryder and Lepton1 Thank this. -
Where ya been Mitch? You get LOST??
-
phones already have that built into them, but the user has the option to turn it on. and what if you're a passenger does that mean i wont be allowed to use my phone. so much for distractions, if it's not gadgets it'll be something else. i remember back in the 90's it was eating, shaving, and doing makeup. now it's less of those and more technology. in about ten years it's going to be something else. so in the end it's not the food, the shavers, compacts, or little electronic toys, it all comes down to the person behind the wheel.
society needs to quit passing off the blame and put it where it belongs.
"Oh Sarah died in a car accident because she was distracted by her cell phone." NO, Sarah died in a car accident because she's retarded. It's not like the phone jump'd up in front of the windshield and said, "check out this cool youtube video of a dog talking!"
as long as society keeps passing off the blame then the issue will never get solved.
Lost? NEVER!!!!volvodriver01 and Hammer166 Thank this. -
I'll agree with this. Although most phones have GPS abilities now, so accelerometers wouldn't be needed.

I believe the word youre looking for is "accountability" or lack there of.

It's not the length of time that counts, but the following distance.
In a 4-wheeler you need at least 4 seconds of following distance at highway speeds. Any closer is too close. In a class 8 truck, you need at least 9-12 seconds at highway speeds (55mph+), depending on the weather conditions.
