I've put the truck im in now to the test. it'll purr in 8th at 25 to 30, mph climb a hill in 10th, the gear cuts out around 46 but the truck doesn't stall. just drop a gear or two. climbing a hill in 7th, cruise can be used at 30 mph and above.set cruise at 33 itll drop to 30/31 mph at 26 mph the gaer cuts out the truck doesnt stall. drop a gear and your fine, had a trainee that managed to stall the same truck on a hill and some stop n go's. we figured out how not to do the stall.

    this is funky truck

Man, this thread is all OVER the place, almost as bad as the "Right-turn" thread, and the CPAP!! Almost glad my internet was out for almost 2 days due to wind, LoL. Hay @Velli You've got a lot of mixed reviews here, and some smack, as well. There's also decent info buried within all the bashing; im actually surprised it hasn't got shut down yet by the mods.
I drive one of 3 different Pete's, all different years, with different trannies, rear-ends, etc. What gear I take off in depends on if I have asphalt behind me in my tank, or if I'm empty; whether or not I'm going uphill or downhill after the stoplight, and like turning off 23 in Granville downhill to uphill, what gear I start in and end up in. I don't think there's a "one-size-fits-all" answer to your question, and I'm sorry you had to experience this. IMHO ..... starting in 4th IS do-able, IF you know the truck, your load, the intersection, your grade, and your RPM's.
Yes it CAN be REALLY hard on the clutch and tranny, but it's all dependent on physics! I at times, do it myself. Second is my go-to gear often, due to what I haul and the terrain I haul on. Like someone posted above, pull 2nd instead of 4th to start, and hurry up and skip to 5th perhaps. At least for the tests.
I just can't believe you are being advised to start in 4th. It takes a little "seasoning" to be able to. I can, I have, sometimes I do ...... but I didn't pick up that "trick" overnight.
After all, why didn't they have you running around the "range" or "pad" at school in anything but 1st?
Wishing you the best man, come back and update.
No offense to ANY of the other posters on here, most of you I believe to be correct as seasoned drivers, and probably forgot your first day driving (as I often do~!)
    Kudos, try again, Be Safe.
