the gear depends on terrain too, in your shoes I'd go with 2nd or 3rd empty. what make of truck are you using to test out in?
Try starting in 1 gear and just let the clutch out. The engine has more then enough torque to get you going. Then so you dont rock the truck or miss a gear shift next gear at 1,000rpm or less. At 1,000 RPM,s or less you don't have to really worry about matching 2,3,4,5. If you don't shift quickly you might have the cab rocking back and forth because of all the engine torque. You can't really stall the engine as you know it has the torque to start in 4. So that why you can start 1 gear shift 1,000 RPMs or less and you always will have power to pull the trailer. Shift at 800 RPMs if you want. Then when you flip the switch for high rang shift at 1,500 RPMs
yes first gear would be fail safe, unless you can down shift to first as you stop, 9.9 times out of 10 expect grind the gear with the clutch all the way to floor board. the truck I'm in currently is governed to the hilt, rpm, speed you name it, starting off in 4th is easy empty
We have heard that from other students that they were being trained to start off in 4th or 5th gear, some were even being instructed to apply fuel while slipping the clutch out in higher gears. That's wrong Start in second gear and let the torque get you moving before applying fuel.
4th gear????Obviously that instructor is a newby himself.I could see that if you're bobtailing but not hooked to a trailer. No wonder you keep stalling.Depending on the stop you should be in between 1st and 3rd gear.Keep your foot on the clutch and when you feel the truck starting to die step on the clutch and give it gas but slowly not like you're in a race. When truck reaches the correct rpms shift to next gear.
Yep, there's your answer. Not too hard to stall it in 4th. Did you start in 4th all the time while training though?
Problem is this: During range training (back/forth manoeuvres) the schools don't want you getting out of 1st gear. When on the road, they insist on starting in 4th. So the OP is clueless on the benefits of gears 2,3 and prolly even gear 1
I'll start in 4th empty.... Seems like there's a big problem with that here. Lol. I'll also start in 6th bobtail. Light 'em up!
hmm, I have a 13 spd. I have low gear. Then 1 to 4. Then 5 hi and low and so on. 6th gear to start, no. Now some would call low gear 1 and 3rd gear 4.
