That is what our cdl instructors told us back in 2010. Things may have changed since then. That was in Iowa.
That is what our cdl instructors told us in 2010 in Iowa. The rules may have changed since then. The rule does not make any sense. Automatics are not subject to the rule as the driver is not the one doing the shifting. I don't know if it is in the regs or not. Sort of like the 3 second rule for being out of gear....the dot will fail you for that too. Once you get your cdl you will always shift when you are taking off and turning. And I don't time myself for how long I am in neutral......I shift when I reach the desired speed when braking to the proper gear.
That is the rule. Thanks. But in real world when coming off interstate, the exit ramp may be a tight turn requiring you to to downshift.....so the tester allows for shifting then. In fact that is where they tested me for being able to downshift.....
Many good people on this site to help the new drivers. Now you're off to a good, new career. Protect that cdl and take care of your health and you'll never be unemployed the rest of your working life.
After thinking about it a little, I'm pretty sure that you can shift in an intersection, just not during the actual turning part. See the example I used previously. Once you start turning the wheel, you shouldn't be shifting. As someone else said, need two hands.
