I'll say this, for training, he should be taught to start in 2nd or 3rd, for tests he should start in 2nd or 3rd, he should not use his clutch as a brake (holding it on the edge of contact) thats a bad habit, and dangerous, one slip, leg cramp, itch, or lost concentration and hes in traffic. But in trw you do what works for you and your gear.

Auto-shifts aren't necessarily inferior to manuals. The only deficiency that I've found with today's auto-shift transmissions is the inability to use reverse in high range, or to start off in any gear above 3rd. Although Volvo's i-Shift transmission does have an optional workaround for that.tinytim Thanks this. -

I just tried starting in 4th gear with 23 k load. Got her going without even touching accelerator.
