The gear that pulls it. Sorry you have a castrated company truck with around 455 hp and a bean counter tune.

Hit the bottom of that ##### at 1800, when it gets 1400 bring her back up 1800 and repeat as necessary.

I would not pull a grade at 1200 rpm . U are putting way to much torque into the driveline with a heavy load. Like @Brettj3876 said. Run the rpms way up to 1800 then let it come back down 1400 if u have a 10 speed ... this is where 13/18 speed comes in handy . I usually pull 1700 or 18 and drop to 1500 and repeat until i make it to the top. Hp is better than torque up the big hills in my opinion

The few times i had a Ryder sub that was a true 455, no progressive shift bs it pulled pretty good.

I was told that the best way to climb a grade is to "downshift until you find a gear where you are able to accelerate, then back out of the throttle just enough to maintain a steady speed."

Unless you have a DD15 with a 2.72 rear, in that case 1200 is well within the power band. If you are running at 1800 rpms, you will risk damage.

Even with a Series 60 detroit if I could hold at 1200, I would. Downshifting at that point would do nothing but slow me down. If I was losing speed/rpm at a rate that I didn't think I could hold 1200, then yeah, I'd drop a gear, but if it looked like I could hold then I would try as there was nothing to lose.

This is miss information. All modern truck engines are very capable of 1800rpm.
