I'd rather share the road with an old hand than some young guy who just immigrated here and doesn't speak English.

I dont know that the medical certification means that much.
Something ive thought more about the more i see motoring public (and truck drivers) do incredibly dumb stuff is that perhaps just EVERYONE with a license needs to be subject to a yearly road test in a 4 wheeler. While yes, That means cdl holders can recertify driving skills in a honda civic, i dont think thats all that unreasonable. What youre looking for is (in older people) lower reaction times, inability to rotate neck, and awareness of the road.
But at the same time you can see how the younger age is prepared for driving (how distracted, aggressive etc)
And it gives you at least a CHANCE to get people with substancr abuse problems off the road. If you cant be sober for 1 day a year, i dont know that you should have the privelege to drive a metal box down the road at any age.
If we coupled this with something else ive thought about for the last few years (disdain or fear of the police) you could make it the responsibility of the state troopers. That would force a good percentage of the public into an interaction with a police officer in a relatively non-threatening environment. Exposure should erode the 100% fear that some people have.
Also to be clear, Not suggesting that the troopers hire dedicated driving testers, its a 2-way street here, basically EVERY active trooper would be required to do tests say one day in 5. It forces a relatively non-hostile interaction on the officers too and gets them a chance to educate, AS WELL as giving the public at large a chance to vet the officers they have entrusted with thier safety.
Sorry i cant really answer the poll with listed options -
I'll be 74 in a few months with my physical due towards the end of August. Don't anticipate any issues there. And while I don't have any intentions of stopping anytime soon, I have been thinking about backing off on the number of loads I run. Only because this working thing has cut into my fishing a little too much.

I say we give up on assuming the govt is competent to do much of anything, anymore.

At my old company, we had a 72yo driver who worked circles around other hands half his age.

i retired cuz i was over 70...
48 years was too long for me.
just like one must be 21 to get a CDL, then retirement should be mandatory as far as a CDL is concerned.
there are other forms of employment for us old timers, which does not rely on quick reflexes, an eye test, blood test for diabetes, sleep apnea testing and anything else..
then comes the physical ability, of either entering/exiting the cab, maybe helping loading or even standing on the dock, to "count" the freight.
i voted yearly DOT physical, as there was no other valid choice..
valid choice (my opinion) would have been, "mandatory revoking of the CDL to an operators (car) license, at the 70th birthday".dwells40, okiedokie, Flat Earth Trucker and 1 other person Thank this. -
Matter of fact I know this to be true.
It only makes the news because of age and the ongoing debate over age related licensing.dwells40, Crude Truckin', bzinger and 3 others Thank this. -
