UPS Freight Diary:

Around my area, at one of their lager hubs, feeders and delivery drivers get paid the same. They're both currently around $35 an hour top rate, but they both get ZERO OT. Only the senior feeder drivers get OT.

Even though Parcel and Freight are two seperate divisions, they're both under the same umbrella. I've seen Parcel drivers fuel up at Freight terminals sometimes, and from my experience, they really don't get along too well with each other.

I can imagine Freight city drivers being jealous of their Brown counterparts. The Freight guys work harder and have to deal with getting a semi into way more difficult places than the feeder guys doing switches at distribution centers all day. And with top rate being $6 less per hour, I can see there being a little tension there.

 

I know some of the Parcel guys get testy when the Freight guys pull Parcel trailers during "peak" season. I'd think they'd at least be happy with Union Labor doing the work, given the number of owner operators that pull Parcel trailers during "peak".

 

Yeah, but that's what Coyote Logistics is for. They want EVERYTHING done inhouse now, or least during the holidays.

Feeders also does P&D. They just don't do as much as Freight. Around my area, Feeder drivers do more of the commercial and industrial P&D, where as Freight does that, and the small mom and pop stores. You'll see a lot of Parcel and Freight drivers P&Ding at the same places.

 

Package delivery drivers POTENTIALLY can make over $100k, since they get paid just as much as Feeders do, but they don't get any OT.

I must admit, being allowed to keep a beard at Freight is a plus.

 

I did the same at RPS, which was Roadway's attempt at running a package delivery service and was later bought by FedEx Ground. I lasted 2 days. The "senior man" in my area had 2 weeks in with the company!

 

Not to mention, Freight drivers use the older, much larger Diad scanners, where as Parcel uses the smaller, udated version.

Parcel generally has better equipment, but then again, they run a much bigger operation.

 

My neighbor is a package car driver for UPS here in the CLE and he works really hard they make good money there house is on a corner lot and they just had a new roof, put on there garage but they run the package car guys really hard.
