Yea I work foodservice for almost 10yrs now in the warehouse and it's similar if its slow they will usually ask for volunteers to go home if not everyone just works a shorter day. I've told them before if I u call me at home I'll stay there. But if I just wasted 45min to get here I gotta get some work

I've found that a pretty reliable indicator of how difficult one of those deliveries may be is to take a look at what's parked in the driveway.

If you see a Mercedes, BMW, Lexus, Acura, Infiniti, etc, expect them to want everything up to and including bringing it in the house, and to demand it rudely.

Conversely, if you see a pickup truck with an NRA bumper sticker, it's "just drop it anywhere".

I did a resi delivery one time with a liftgated pup trailer. I had 2 skids of hardwood flooring about the width of the trailer and weighed about 2-3 thousand pounds each. It was being delivered to what seemed like a 2 million dollar mansion. They had a driveway that appeared to be a half mile long. So I drove in nose forward onto this skinny driveway with my wheels barely staying on the road. As I came closer to the house, I noticed it was gated, and coming out of the house was a mean old nasty looking lady, looking like Cruella de Ville. I then noticed that I had nowhere to turn around to deliver her load, so I asked her if I could go thru her gate and swing around in front of her driveway, which by the way looked like it was a quarter mile long, and she said NO. So I looked around and saw a fork in the driveway that lead to a neighbors house. I then told her I would have to back up onto that fork in the road, but I might run over her lawn a little, and again, she said NO. So I then had to back up the pup all the way back to the entrance way, which by the way is not easy with a pup, and turn around and back up all the way back to the house. As I got out of the truck to unload her flooring, she was nowhere to be found. So I dragged these pallets all the up to her house, which felt like a quarter mile. When I was done, I knocked on her door and she signed my paperwork and then shut the door just as quick without even saying a thank you. So as I was walking back to my truck, all tired and sweaty, feeling like a peasant, I got in my truck, and what did I see out of the corner of my eye, "her precious lawn" that she didn't want me to go over. Just then, on my left shoulder, and angel replied saying "don't do it". On my right shoulder, the devil appeared and said "DO IT, DO IT".......aaannnddd......you guessed it, the devil knocked the halo off my left shoulder. I drove over her lawn and left a 2" tread about 30 feet long.

I know, I shouldn't have done it, but what can I say, the devil made me do it.

You might be right. i haven't paid too much attention to what's in the driveway, but you may be accurate. My route is a fairly upscale part of town and it's hit or miss whether i get tipped. i'm thinking 40% of the time i'll get one. Sometimes people living in the "huts" tip, sometimes they don't. Sometimes people in the "mansions" do tip. i do not rely or expect tips. It's just a bonus that can buy a few lunches or gas.

i think it is except for the first 2-3 years. But even at my $18 per hour rate it can be over 50K because of overtime, and i'm getting average 8 hours OT per week. This will become clearer as i post my up coming checks. i know for sure that the average road driver at top rate is making $75,000 without even trying.

This, to me, doesn't do any good---it's only going to make them more angry at the world. It doesn't bother me much if someone doesn't want to tip or be rude. You don't know their story---maybe they inherited that mansion (probably did with that kind of attitude because there's no way they would have lasted in business), maybe their parents weren't that nice to em etc.......

Yeah I agree, I do regret it, but sometimes you can kick a dog so many times before they bite back. You treat somebody with dignity and respect, and it will be given back. Look at waitresses, if you treat them with disrespect, and don't tip, you can bet you're food is gonna taste funny.

Not quite. Waitresses don't typically get tips until AFTER you've eaten. ;)

I got a question RR that puzzles me myself. Normally outside carriers aren't allowed in union shops, so how does the whole owner operator thing work out? I know Fed Ex usese them, but that might change now that their turning union.

Even union carriers typically have some allowance in the contract for purchase transportation. I've seen a Werner truck pulling a set of ABF pups. And don't get confused: FedEx Freight is not going union. Some terminals have voted the Teamsters in but many more voted no.
