Just curious, what's the $200/week insurance? Shouldn't be that much with bobtail.
-
Because that's less than a driver makes with no risk. Employee also gets health insurance included retirement and vacation pay. So you're actually working for less than an employee.
-
I estimated high on insurance, allotted $500/week to go to the truck ($26000/year,and I estimated on the low end for mileage.
-
Your $200 a week is about right for physical damage on a truck with a $2000 a month payment, plus bobtail, occ/acc, etc.
$1640/3000=.55 with no benefits, plus you get hit with self employment tax. That is a best case scenario as well, as your fixed costs aren't incremental with how many miles you run. Take a week or two off due to repairs, vacation etc, and you're going to be running in the hole. 2 weeks off is $2400 in the hole for fixed costs, which means you're not getting a paycheck for 1 1/2 weeks of running, or 3 1/2 weeks total. It just doesn't make sense when you can be a company driver these days for .55 plus benefits, paid vacation, no self employment tax, no being in the hole after you take time off. You will make MORE money as a company driver.
Oh, forgot to add, I averaged $1.25 per mile pulling a dry van in 2002 when everything was MUCH cheaper out here. A brand spanking new truck could be had for $90,000 or so.CbusTrucker and mp4694330 Thank this. -
