UPS Tractors ....

    Do newbies tend to get full time hours?. $18.75 is rough at 40hrs but would be suicidal if struggling to get 20 hrs per week.

    It depends on the terminal. I know my first year, I got 50-plus hours every week. This year, some things have been going on with restructuring the feeder board, and I've been hovering around 30-40.

    i would concur: i would get 50+/- hours per week; So a new guy could and did make 50K per year.

    Now if you look at my diary, i only made like 40K my first year, BUT i had to take like a month and a half off for family reasons.

    It depends on the terminal, and don't be buying a new suburban just yet.

    Oh crap; i thought you were talking about freight.

    Well, anyways, that's the way it is at freight. Depends on terminal and there's no shame in buying like a 2012-2015 suburban.

    I made 46k my first year in feeders. It wasn't a full year about 10.5 months. Year after i made 52k then year after that 70k. Im on pace to make 100k+ this year.

    As far as being hired off the street is concerned, a friend of mine got on by doing seasonal work during the lead up to Christmas a few years ago. After that time passed they hired him on full time.

    It is an on-call situation the whole time during the seasonal rush and was extremely difficult for him, but if you prove yourself and don't flake out during that period, you may get on with them. I'm sure as with LTL everything varies by location.

    I get the impression they like to hire from the outside that way so that they can see whether somebody would be a good fit or a slacker before going through the hiring process.

    Another way is UPSF. You can transfer from freight to package if your area is in need of feeder drivers. Getting hired on UPSF isn’t that hard vs going thru the Package work your way up. But most UPSF hire city more then road driver positions.

    By me freight guys can not transfer to package. You would have to resign from freight and apply to a feeder position and go thru the hiring process and start from the bottom. Being from freight would probably better your odds of getting hired.

    In my local at least they can hire 1 off the street for every 4 or 5 hired from inside, unless they have more open positions than inside hires.
    With the growth we are experiencing they are hiring off the street quite often.
