With the way things are on staffing drivers it was 34 an hr through peak and returned to 30 an hr where as normal progression is 21 first year. I dont see these going away and back to progression rates. UPS is offering sign on bonus at the moment. Add on what everyone else has said its kind of a no brainer. Yes the on call sucks. Want a regular schedule, recruit a friend and run team lol
This is true. A lot of what I said about how awful the early days at UPS can be can be circumvented if you just team. Steady work schedule, and making plenty of money.
Exactly why my first Bid job was Salt Lake City and then Buffalo. It wasn’t because I liked the snow. Lol
With UPS or any other carrier, "progression" should never be. Anyone doing the same job as the next man, should be making the same amount. Now I realize there is a "learning curve" involved but that is the cost of doing business.
Unfortunately that is how it has been for years in many jobs. Not so much today because many carriers are having trouble filling the “good” jobs like UPS jobs and some freight jobs. Some locations and companies will up the cash for full or very close to full pay immediately, but only when there is difficulty filling the seats. Progression definitely sucks but many of us had to do it. I say do away with progression pay and have a longer probationary period so they can get rid of those who can’t or won’t perform up to standards.
I agree with this to a certain extent… If a driver is hired with only 1-3 years experience they should be started at a lower rate than a seasoned driver say going from one LTL to another. But I understand the progression thing. I went though it at my current job. Then 6 months later everyone went to or started at top rate. I did the on call crap at YRC when I first started driving that’s why I’m not leaving FXF. I would like to jump ship and go to ABF or UPS but 24/7 on call with no set days off, no way I could do that again. Especially with 2 kids. I already screw up Saturday’s for my wife since I work nights.
I might agree with a "progression" for 6 to 12 months, but not for 3 or 4 years. Years ago, when I first got into transportation, I went to work for Carolina Trailways and if memory serves me right, it took us a year to get on top pay. About every quarter, the pay went up for new hires until we reached top pay.
UPS in Chicago is offering $9000 bonus, $0.71 a mile, $30/hr to run teams BUT must run on weekends and I guess I wouldn’t be home everyday. The money is definitely there but I enjoy being home everyday with my kids too much.
Ok, i'm not saying it CAN'T be done, but could you explain in greater detail, how you have time to drive 515 miles (unhook and hook your doubles, i'm ASSuming, at your home terminal, and at the hub terminal) AND work the dock for 4 hours in a shift? BTW, we at Terrible-Force are also at .72 cpm and $29.85 hourly, but i don't see any runs that are 500+ with dockwork.
