Hi everyone, my name is ravinder I’m from British Columbia, canada. I recently bought a peterbilt 579 with x15 500hp 1850 torque, 3.25 gear ratio,235 wheel base, meritor 2014x4dcrnn742 differentials,12 speed eaton endurant hd amt tranny, i used to do jet fuel for trimac as a company driver nd really liked it but then I decided to grow and wanted to be an owner op, as I’m new in heavy haul(tanker) industry I didn’t had that much knowledge about choosing the specs,so I got a good deal with my truck nd bought it, but unfortunately trimac said no to me cus it’s not heavy spec, now I have another opportunity from some company to do a local run for fuel superb’s but the problem is there’s 3 steep hills to climb on my way back from the refinery..nd I’m really confused if my truck with above mentioned specs can haul it? Or do i need to get the gear ratio and diffs changed?? If yes can someone please let me know what can be possible with my current setup? Hoping to hear back soon from you guys, and sorry if this is a dumb question any little help would be appreciated.
Urgent! Need help with gear ratio

Depends on the weight. If your gonna be around the 80-90k mark you should be fine.
Last Call Thanks this. -
It’s gonna be around 120000…
-
In that case depends how steep the hills are!
Seriously if the hills are large you may have some struggles. Someone should chime in with a more technical answer but you’ll probably be looking to re gear it. -
The hills are between 5 to 6 percent steep and about like 9 miles longer,You think 3.73 can do the job??

Honestly it’s gonna be very difficult climbing those hills. I’m talking a 15-20mph climb if it doesn’t overheat or the trans decide to miss a gear etc.
That transmission is max rated at 110k GCW and the axles are 80k max GCW.
Unless this is your only choice I believe I’d get a different truck or scale back the weight.Last edited: Jul 16, 2023
Ravind3r Thanks this. -
Just send it you'll be fine. The rear gear only matters in high gear.
On the hills you might be a gear or two lower in the transmission and keep the right foot off the floor and it won't overheat.
In the good old days we used to haul 140,000 lbs all over the place with 187 hp and a tri-plex, then upgraded to a 237 with a 5 speed main with an overdrive.
Then went with a Louisville with a 335 and a 9513 trans but ya 4.33-1 rear. at 140,000 lbs.
Sorry for the reminiscing,
But ya if I needed more in your case I'd bump up the torque first.
The driver is the most important part of this equation, just don't drive it like it's a company truck. -

These are my full specs
