I'm sitting in my yard when a US Express trailer shows up. The driver gets out cursing and swearing. "What a bad trip this was" he said. He went on rambling about everything, and then he said something that caught my attention. "I had to drive through the Virginia Mountains along i77 and i79 with no brakes on my trailer. When he started to unhook the trailer I jumped underneath to have a look. It was true what he stated the brake shoes were there however S Cams were full adjusted and you could see the gap between the brake shoe and drum.
Here is the conversation.
Me: Why did you hook up?
Driver: Dispatcher stated the load had to get there, it was urgent.
Me: So driving down the road with no trailer brakes hauling almost 40,000 pounds is right.
Driver: Well no but if I did not hook up I have to sit there till Monday.
Me: After your dispatcher was informed that you had no brakes he still allowed you to go down the road.
Driver: Yup.
Me: Have you heard about CSA 2010?
Driver: Yes.
Me: Do you know what would happen if you got caught?
Driver: Yes the company would get a fine I would get a fine and the company would get points against them.
Me: You will also get points.
Driver: No. It's the companies fault.
Me: It's more yours then theirs you hooked up to the trailer.
Driver: Well I got the load delivered.
Me: Unbelievable, that you would risk your life and those around you.
Then I just walked away. I'm looking forward to CSA 2010. This driver has been driving for over 30 years and I can't understand how both driver and dispatcher are willing to drive with no brakes.
US Express.. How bad can they get?

Should have communicated this over the qualcom. The outcome would have been different. Guys use common sense when dealing with dispatchers. Put everthing on the qualcom.
JustSonny Thanks this. -
They must have a great maint dept all 4 brakes camming over. The driver must sit the weekend. are you a fool or what whoever the driver ya gotta have common sence. dispatch told me bs no excuse

i was planning on not replying since I've bad mouthed this company enough lately.
But anyway, it doesn't surprise me at all.

Thanks for the post, they are on my list of pre-hires, every company has stories though. This is not very good, why not refuse this load instead of putting yourself and others in danger.

Thanks for the heads up, I am a newbie about to start school and this information is great.

see this what newbies dont realize....if the truck or trailer is broke get it fixed...before leaving....but I know a company of this size its harder to do...
but if something is broke I take it to the shop get it fixed...."THEN CALL and ask for the comcheck to pay for it"' I dont call comp first and ask to get it fixed....it gets fixed then ask for the money to get it out of the shop after its fixed....
IF IT AINT RIGHT
IT DONT RIDE...telcobilly Thanks this. -
I really don't see how this is the companies fault in the least. Anyone with a cdl knows that they aren't supposed to be pulling a trailer with no brakes. If you are dumb enough to do it then it's your baby. If company is constantly pressuring you to do something you don't feel comfortable doing, then leave the company. Everyone likes to whine and cry and take pics of qualcomm to try to get someone else in trouble. If you have qualcomm proof that you were "forced" to do something illegal, you're still in trouble for doing it.
I quit company job after company job because I didn't like the way I was treated. I finally bought my own equipment and it was the best move I ever made. But if you go to a bottom-feeder like U.S Express you can't cry when you get treated like they treat you.truckguy391 Thanks this. -
I would of hooked to the trailer to secure the load and headed straight to the TA in Wytheville, VA on I77 or the nearest shop. Then documented everything on Qualcoom or Peoplenet. Dispatchers have a whole new attitude when they can't hide stuff, like on the phone. The repairs wouldn't of taken a half a day if the brakes weren't just adjusted the wrong way. I hardly believe all the S-cams were all wore at the same time. Sounds like a case of lefty loosey, righty tighty

No matter what anybody says or what pressure is put on you, you are solely responsible for that truck and trailer. CYA!!!rollin coal Thanks this.
