So, if I'm a valuable employee who doesn't stand in opposition to management simply because they exist, and in fact works with management when I believe they are making reasonable decisions (I've always been one to voice my opinion if I think they're wrong), they wouldn't want to retain me?

Please tell me that you think every union worker is the exact opposite of what you described.

Not saying that at all. But if I have no grievances with them during a strike and am still performing my duties because my primary responsibility is putting food on the table for my family, I could be wrong, but when the dust had settled, I would think I would still be around.
I never intended to get caught up in a lengthy debate, obviously I've ruffled a few feathers, but I just wanted to find out for sure if there were those among you that have no problem with violent behavior towards others. That was confirmed a while ago.

Leave. Obviously they are affecting your ability to provide (which is, I expect, the reason most of us work), why would you continue to enable them to exert this level of influence in your life?

Leave a job with high pay, a pension, and great benefits? Why not take a shot at striking before you pack up and go? What's to lose, the company says they want to shut it down anyway.

That would spell the end of my union tenure. Keeping a roof over my head and food in the icebox is more important than going along to get along with those whom I can't necessarily confirm having my best interests in mind.

Unions do have their place, I'll give you that. I wish there were something here at my company to combat the favoritism and personal vendettas in the office.

Problem is, it wouldn't stop there.

The slackers and malcontents would keep demanding more and more from the proverbial golden goose when they shouldn't be in any position to demand diddly squat.

Every time I hear someone mention the "U" word around here I'm reminded that, all things considered, we really don't have it too bad. We're actually paid a higher rate then the union guys, the productive employees do receive some degree of respect, and the level of micromanagement that Fedex and Con-Way drivers are forced to tolerate is not present.

I'll admit though, there are times when a statement has to be made, and if the ones in a position to do that feel justified in doing so, then have at it with my blessing.

Everyone sees what you think of every union worker, as well. You obviously have a chip on your shoulder against anyone under union contract.

Obviously those are factors that need to be considered, and everyone has their own brand of cost/benefit analysis associated with such decisions. I'd cut my losses and leave, in such a situation. The only thing you're really taking a bath on is the pension, which isn't perhaps such a bath at all if you've only been in a short time relatively.

Once again, not true; I come from a family with plenty of union members and supporters from close to a dozen different fields. I'm a former union member myself. I have no issues with the average rank and file, it's the leadership and the small portion of elitist membership that gives the rest a bad name that I have the problem with.

Ok I gotta chime back in ..in my tenure at alliant in Omaha which was a union shop ..hate to say this cause foodservice is dam hard work ! ...I never had a consistent route and most every day was different that being said I just wanted to get my run done as fast as possible and go home .
Others would get they're run done and park somewhere on milking the clock .
Me I hauled as back to the warehouse , cleaned out my trailer and hit the door after having my ### chewed by management and dirty looks from others for doin my job to fast .
That doesent change my pro Union view tho because these ceo's don't care who they crap on .
