I’m doing a job where I go on duty in the usa around 1030pm, and work until 2pm with maybe 1 hr of driving during that time. Then I sometimes drive for an hour, or immediately sleep. I don’t want to take the full 10 hours off duty,
So
1) Onduty/driving: 1030pm-300am = 3hrs/1.5hrs (onduty/driving)
2) sleeper birth: 300-1000am = 7 hrs
3) Driving 1000am - 730pm = 9.5 hrs (hit the max 11)
4) Sleeper birth 730-1030 = 3 hrs
5) so to my understanding, my 14 hrs restarts after the first sleeperbirth break 2), which means I have already driven 9.5 hrs, and just have 1.5 hrs left. So
6) 1030-1200am = 1.5 driving (hit the max 11)
7) sleeperbirth: 1200am-7am = 7 hrs
8) so to my understanding, my 14 hrs restarts after the second sleeperbirth break 4), which means I have already driven 1.5 hrs, and just have 9.5 hrs left. So
9) driving: 7am- 430pm = 9.5 (hit max 11)
etc
this how sleeperbirth works in the us?

You might read/study the embedded PDF template in the following Forum thread...it was created by one of the major carriers here in the US:
Split sleeper tutorial template | TruckersReport.com Trucking Forum | #1 CDL Truck Driver Message Board (thetruckersreport.com)

I seldom used the split sleeper rule because it is so easy to make a mistake and create what the Feds call an egregious HOS violation. In step 5 above your 14 hour clock stops running while you take 7 hours in the sleeper Your 14 hour clock doesn't reset to a new 14 hour period. At the end of first sleeper period your 14 hour clock resumes where it left off before sleeper. Before and after your first sleeper period you use the same 14 hour clock.lual Thanks this.

ty - I read in multiple tutorials that the sleeper birth rule is rotating until a full 10 hr break is taken.
If it is otherwise, I can extend my 14 hr day by 10 hrs (7/3 hr break), and then must take a 10 hr break to reset.
I didn’t read that you had to take a 10hr break after doing the sleeper birth rule anywhere
what I did read was (possibly), if you want to stay in sleeper rotation, after your second sleeperbirth rest, you subtract the hours worked after the first sleeperbirth rest (in between the two rests) from the total 11/14 hours, and this is how many working hours you have until your next rest.
1) Drove 4 hours
2) sleeperbirth 7 hours
3) drove 7 hours (11hr max)
4) sleeperbirth 3 hours (or off duty)
which completes the day of 11hrs driving and 10 hours sleeperbirth (shorter sleeper break can be mix of off duty/sleeper)
to keep on sleeperbirth rotation (instead of now having to take 10 hrs straight off duty), I start my next 14 hours after “2)”, the first break, which means I only have 4 hours of driving until I hit my 11 max, and need a 7 hour break again.
I always calculate the amount of hours left by subtracting from 14 the amount of hours worked between the two last sleeper breaks.
So
5) drove 4 hrs (11hr max)
6) sleeper 7 hours
now I reset the 14 after break “4)”, which means I have already driven 4 hours, so I have 7 hours of driving left until next break. To my understanding you start the 14 the break before the last. So
7) drove 7 hrs (hit max 11hrs)
8) sleeper/off duty 3hrs
9)

Punch the numbers in the hos tool and see what it says.

Sorry, my brain can't follow the above. I'm sure it's my problem, not the way you asked the question. In a day or two more drivers that use the split sleeper break will answer you.
