Using Google Maps

What good is all of those traffic apps and maps etc. ?
Most drivers today will not get off the road and take a secondary road to get around a jam.
I see trucks in those parking lots with every gee wiz device on their dash sitting in that traffic jam!lol

 

That used to be a great app, then Google got a hold of it and ruined it, probably because it competed with Google maps.

I just leave Google maps up and running, programmed for my destination even when I know where I’m going. It’ll update your ETA and tell you if there’s a faster way lonng before you get to a mess.

 

I really only use it for traffic and satellite images of where the shipper or receiver


Every now and then if the QC is down I'll use it as a GPS, but of course make sure im aware of my surroundings

 

I haven't noticed any change at all. How was it "ruined"?

 

Random crashing, people spamming cops and road hazards where there were none, no route found. I quit using it over a year ago.

 

Any updates on this? I’ve used Waze and google maps. Wazes update on traffic, police and hazards is quite good. Waze will often take my on a circuitous route to save me two minutes though. Frankly it’s annoying and most times I’d rather stay on the freeway, often the re-routes could be faster, but one red light off of the freeway can end that savings. Most of my current driving and deliveries I know the routes, but I use Waze to check. I’ve also learned to double check the routes.

I just downloaded Truckers Path. It seems to use the google platform. Can any of these specifically do truck routes?

For traffic and construction detours, Google is good in that it will tell you an approximate travel time on each route AND it takes into account lights, typical traffic and typical travel times. BUT, it also assumes you're in an automobile and will drive the posted speed limits. With this in mind, many detour suggestions are not advised in a truck, especially if you only drive 60-65 in a 70+ speed limit area.

 

If it is being used as a gps this isn't likely. Just don't be checking your stock portfolio or anything else while it's there

 

just went down Pa. Turnpike to pick up a car broke down at the travel plaza.
Got off Rt. 22, went down 1 mile and got off at travel plaza.
There's a fence thru the middle separating north/southbound. Just great.
Wouldn't let me thru the gate. Grrr. I went 13 miles southbound, got off, paid. Got another ticket.
Went 13 miles Northbound - just to get to other side of fence. Why am I telling you this?

No; Google maps said go 78 to 309 and get on Turnpike in Quakertown and go northbound.
Me being smarter than the dumb GPS, or the computer said no way; that's out of my way.
Guess what - it was right.

 

Google knows what they are doing. Their people know how to write routing code and keep maps very current. No other routing code can even come close to matching Google's.
