The only thing I haven't found in a GPS App is the ability to manicure some of my regular routes. For Instance I go back and forth between San Diego, OC, and Santa Barbara (190 miles or so each way) all the time. Google will want me to go certain ways that I know are just way more stressful. If given a choice and my ETA back to SB is close I'd rather go 5-405-10 to the 1 and go through Malibu to Oxnard and then get on the 101. The drive is during the day a similar time wise, but its a nicer drive and the San Fernando Valley etc gets hot while the coast stays nice and cool. The issue is the Waze App always wants me to go 5-101. That drive sucks and it will be 2 to 5 minutes faster. Similar issues between SB and Santa Cruz/SF. I wish they'd let me pick some favorites.

But to be fair, Google uses huge banks of super computers analyzing huge amounts of live data to serve up accurate route requests, as well as other options, in less then a second, then sending the information back to the requester.

Google maps on my I pad with its own connection is all I’ve used for the last 2 years. Also has my keep truckin eld on there too. Just need to look closely at your first and last mile. It helps that my truck is only 11’ tall.

Oh, I do have a paper atlas I do pull out occasionally.

Not sure but the tablet belongs to my company and I checked in with the tech dept one day when they put out a warning to drivers regarding going over the allowed data use. They said I wasn't even close. I only use it for showing completed loading, signing off for cars delivered, Drivewize which tells me to either enter or bypass the chicken house, Google Maps and My Radar.

All 3 of my electronic devices are mounted. I wear a headset when I'm on the phone. If I touch my mounted phone for any other reason it is for a podcast or Google Play Music which require no more distraction than it does to change the radio station on your radio.

I will if I think it's worth it. I can use Google Maps to see what it looks like on the detour path. If it's not much better than there's not much you can do but wait it out. If you pay attention and see it way ahead of time, you can reroute or plan accordingly. It has saved my butt more than once I'll tell you.

I use Trucker Path to see what the scales are doing. My company won't overload us with cars unless we request it. Most of my travel is on the toll road between Baltimore and Milwaukee, Madison and Rockford, Il. We use an app called DriveWyze and I usually get to bypass the scales. The only one that welcomes you now and then is W I-70 in Friendship, Md W of baltimore.

Apps like Waze and G Maps are good tools for monitoring what's ahead but when it comes to these big trucks and a detour we still have to use our heads even with a commercial GPS because every now and then they make mistakes. Youtube is filled with stories of drivers who learned that lesson the hard way.
