I used J hooks and used bungee hooks. Lost a lot too! I like barrolls first reply on ideas. 25 ft is about the max length + extra pieces for repairs as it will hold with a square knot.

Thanks thats a great idea and it is cheap and simple when compared to installing a bunch of J-hooks.

I recently had some shock cord cut itself on some steel pate that was sharper than it looked, leaving me with a piece about 15' long, so I figured I'd give OP's idea a try, albeit on 4' tarps.

It looks a bit uglier in this picture, but shaking and blowing down the road got the tension evened out in about 50 miles. Just make sure you have some bungees on every row of D-rings pulling the back of the tarp down and forward, because using shock cord forms a more uniform seal on the lumber flap, and it'll pillow out a good deal if you don't. I only had a single centered pallet of bags on this load, so it might be a bit different over 8' wide.

Bottom line, it works. Whether or not it's better is dictated more by your personal tarping style than anything.

I'd like to know what a "trick hook" is as well. I just spent an hour yesterday wandering around a steel mill picking up 50 discarded S-hooks since they've been treating me like the best thing since sliced bread.
