The recruiter called again today and she asked when I wanted to attend orientation in California. I said I had a couple of ?'s 1st. I told her that I had seen write ups on the internet that drivers that had gone through orientation and sent home to wait for a trainer. I asked if this was true ? She said "yes..there was a chance you could be sent home to wait for a trainer". I asked if you got paid for this time since USX required you to quit any employment you had before going. She said "no" "but the wait should only be a few days". Iasked what was the average wait she said "1 week". I said I saw a write up where one person was still waiting since Thanksgiving. She said "if that was true it was the drivers fault for not being available and being ready when the call came. I said I saw more than one on there. She said " we have 4500 drivers and that is only 2 reports".
I asked if transportation was paid for to return home to wait. She said "yes". I asked if I would have to return to California once called that a Trainer was available? She said "maybe...or you could get picked up depending on the load".
She seemed to have knowledge of some of the postings even though she did not mention this site by name. She did seem a little upset at the ?'s but was very nice at the end.
I wonder what she put in my folder?
I told her I needed time to think about a date and would get back to her. I also told her that I had been "pre-hired by 2 other companies and I needed to weigh the best option. She seemed fine with that.

Let me know who it works out with USX. I still haven't ruled them out. Did they offer to pay your way home while waiting ?
Where did you go through orientation at ? -

Finally back at home. Been training for USX. Found out Werner does the scheduling for the dollar general account. Some days are wasted sitting and wainting for the paperwork to come in. Don't get paid for sitting. Then you have to hurry that evening and drive to your 0600 first drop. Loads average up to approx 40,000lbs. Are on baskets with wheels. Some of the heaviest are between 700 to 1200lbs. You push these by hand. It is not a bad job. If the truck is sitting on level ground, which most of the time is (not). This job is not for the person with a weak back. Getting home if you live 5 to 6 hours from Jonesville SC is a problem. Can't always get guaranteed home time. Routes laid out are crazy. EXample-- Sent to Griffin Ga then north to Decatur Ga, then Covington Ga, then Buford Ga, Then back to Jonesville for your next load. Let me know if anyone else thinks this company is wasting time and money, but not sharing it with their employee's. Oh by the way average pay is between $700 and $1100 for the ones with experience. Some are making as low as $450 per week. Remember unless you live next to the terminals you are away from home all week and are not guaranteed you will be home on the weekends.

Ya I hear that, the only difference between Zanesville and this DC seems to be that the freight is floor loaded in Zanesville, no rolltainers there. I did one run for them out of there, one stop was told it was rolltainers and come to find it was 36,000 floor loaded. Lightest piece on the truck was 25lbs. I ran out of Zanesville to some podunk town in central NY. A 9 hour drive, got there 4 hours early so they weren't ready and had to wait 4 hours. Then they had these two I beam poles in the "dock", I took care of them with my chains real fast after I loosened them with their POS trailer. I managed to unload in less than 5 hours, a personal best for me on a floor load by myself, but herniated a disc in my back in the process. I had to drive 4 hours to buffalo the next morning and waited in a bad neighborhood for 6 hours to receive 6 cases of headbands, yeah glad that wasn't a pay by weight payload. Oh forgot the best part, wasted 4 hours on the NY state thruway sitting at a DOT checkpoint waiting for a certified NY state thruway mechanic to reset the 3 very badly adjusted trailer brakes on a POS trailer that got me pulled over into the checkpoint in the first place. The brakes by the way were all over 2 inches out of adjustment, and these trailers are supposed to be "inspected" after every run?? So in all a run that should've taken a day and half turned into a 2 and a half day affair. I rejected every load that USX attempted to throw at me out of there after that. -
People considering hiring on at USX as a SOLO driver need to remember that they put your miles on the rails and Solo's are used for short haul and to PU and DEL for the many teams and contractors they have. They will hold you for days so you can meet that train and hump the load a hundred miles and deliver it.
What good is .41 cents a mile if you ain't getting the miles or have to throw your log book in the sleeper and be able to run whenever because you are starving at the T/S and terminal.

Unfortunately, that's the way it is and will be from now on. Solo drivers, or trucks period for that matter, are just not an efficient way to move freight, when trains run constantly, and can carry a whole lot more.
Besides, the general public wants to see less trucks on the road, not more.
Teaming may not ever be mandated by the feds, but soon it will be the only way companies operate.
