Hawk, although The routing would have made more sense in reverse, it's not as bad as it sounds on paper. Abingdon and Lenoir are less than 100 short miles apart. That brings me to my latest delimma, my Rand McNally wants me to take the super scenic route back down 321, west on 40, north on 26, then north on 81. Looking at the atlas, I can see why. However, this doubles the mileage. 0600 here in Lenoir and 1100 in Abingdon, doesn't leave much time for scenic routes. Obviously Tyson planned this one on short miles. Anybody been here, done that? Shortest would be continue up 321 to 421 to 91. That however, involves gray shaded routes through the mountains
Husker thanks for the replies. I think I found the right spot early this morning. Nobody chased me off at least. I'm sure glad to be already on site at Lenoir for that 0600 too. I'm not a fan of mornings!

US 321
WATAUGA
Trucks and all other vehicles with an axle load limit in excess of 13,000 lbs. shall be prohibited from the intersection of US 221-421- NC 194 with US 221-NC 105, thence along US 421-NC 194 to US 321, thence along US 321-421-NC 194 to SR 1107.
Say what?
http://www.ncdot.org/travel/statemapping/download/nctruckrestrix.pdf
Here it shows 321/421 west of Boone as restricted, though the atlas has it as designated route, no restrictions.

The atlas says 91 and 58 are restricted where I need them, however according to this it's good?

Don't think it's legal. Gonna be late either way, so going around!

Good choice!
I know that North Carolina's been working pretty hard the last couple of years to ban trucks from a lot of the two lanes up in the mountains toward the TN border. Some of the new restrictions aren't even properly signed yet, let alone edited in the Atlas.
It's all for good reason, too. They're tight roads that nobody in their right mind really wants to be on if they're 65' long, and in most cases (yours excluded) it's not even a natural logic to think of taking them.
For instance: Deal's gap used to be legal. This road. Legal. Not anymore. Actually, it's still technically legal on the TN side. -
Copy that driver! I was being a smart guy on the way out of Lenoir and went left for two miles then right for a mile to "shortcut" over to 64, and that was exciting enough! I swear the lane was exactly 102" wide, with a 2" shoulder!

Anybody been following the Rand TND 760? I just learned about it. It's basically a 710 with an EOBR and most of the big bro features and communication of a Qualcomm! Way cheaper too I'm sure! Depending on the structure of the data plan or w/e, seems like a no brainer for a small fleet that wants that kind of tech.

The first time I did the Lenoir, NC to Abingdon run I took US 321 up to I 26 and needless to say I will never do that one again! It's all fine and dandy until Patterson, NC then it is slow going from there, beautiful country though. Another route to avoid is US 501 from Buena Vista, VA down to Glasgow. If you have to go from Lexington to the Lynchburg area just plan on taking the long way around through Roanoke. It's nothing but steep grades, switch backs & a few Veeeerrrryy tigh overpasses.
bbechtel16 Thanks this. -
Good to know Husker. I'm here at RDC all safe and sound, ready to take you all down for a Norton in the morning, haha. At least I think that's what I want. I'm trying to get home for the festivities this weekend. What kind of back hauls and schedules are we talking about out of there lately?
-
Well Brian, I don't think you will be competing with me. I'm here in Allentown and i won't be leaving until 1 AM, once i stop for fuel and get to the RDC it will be around 5.. For some reason Cory don't like to give Norton's to guys who don't get clear until Late.. So for some reason it seems i will be taking an Albany, at least i hope, i might try to squeez Josh for a Norton but if it don't happen, o well...
And Husker, that 501 you was talking about, i use to see that Road as a kid alot. My dad use to haul logs to that paper mill in Big Island on 501... Pretty tight but not as bad when your pulling an 45 foot stick wagon.. When i did Wal-Mart dedicated out of Gordonsville, we use to haul to a couple of stores up in the Mountains for WV.. one store in particular, Summersville, WV we had to take Route 60 off of 64 (Sams Black Church) to Route 39, to Route 20... back to 19... and you talking about Switchbacks!!! #####... -
Brian,
Your adventures in NC sound nerve racking, unless you like that kind of thing of course. Anyway, regarding Norton backhauls, it can very from Long Island to RDC, or Milliard to RDC, we used to carry General Mills from Haverhill Ma to Jessup, Md. but haven't done that in awhile. Lately it has been deadhead to Delhi NY for a drop at RDC or other places in the region? 276 miles from Norton to Delhi, yea I know.
Happy Trails
