I think you are referring to inspection not being required if their is only one unit , like an O/O always using the same tractor/trailer with the same driver .

Just stop and do a full inspection every hour. That'll make everyone happy.

My carrier is very unreasonable . We are on e-logs and must log 15 minutes for pretrip and posttrip . But get this . When we select inspection on a unit the only option that pops up is to select satisfactory . There is no other option and we can't proceed until completing the inspection that way . We have Xata Turnpike e-logs and I know they have an option to list defects .
They have us use triplicate paper DVIR's but this is how the copies are marked . White - tractor , yellow - trailer , pink - driver . When we first got these the safety department complained about not getting copies . I told them I put one copy on the tractor , one on the trailer , and they weren't drivers .

If any problems exist (or existed from the previous driver's trip) the report MUST be signed at the pre-trip. How do you know if any problems exist if you don't do the pre-trip or review the last driver's report?

    From http://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/facts-research/research-technology/publications/accidenthm/vehicle.htm

    • Check whole vehicle carefully, pre-trip and post-trip.
    • Pre-trip and post-trip inspection reports are an important part of the job.
    • Ensure annual vehicle inspection report or decal is in or on the vehicle.
    • Don't drive a faulty vehicle.

    TO the Original Poster,
There is reason to your company's madness
#1 The company makes their own policy.
#2 The company owns the vehicle you use to make a living
#3 The company writes your checks..
#4 As long as they ask their drivers to do the minimum that DOT requires, DOT leaves them alone.. They however have the right as the Company to ask for more from their employee's.. (Not saying you don't do so)
#5 Every rule, company policy, warning label etc is there because someone has "broken" the rules or done something ignorant to warrant such policies. And even though most policy's make no sense to people who do things right we are forced to follow them thanks to those who did not do things right..

Actually I was referring to the quoted text requiring inspections of intermodal equipment. Intermodal meaning the shipment being handled through 2 types of carriers, such as rail and truck or ship and truck.

    Best regards

And no one mentioned that the white original is turned in when a new one is completed?

    Best regards

I got in a big dispute with the regional safety manager over this . We were told to turn in the original with paperwork at the end of each trip . I said that couldn't be done if a trailer we dropped at another location during a drop and hook was found to have defects when dropped . I quoted this .
How can the original be signed off if it has been turned in ?
I was told turn them in as told or be put out of service .
They have now changed policy . Due to being unable to keep track of DVIR's we are told to not rip the originals out of the book and to turn the whole book in at the end of the month . When I have a defect I give the shop the whole book and they sign the appropriate page .

but it appears the same problem exists if you drop a trailer with defects on the DVIR. There is a way to handle it though.
    Best regards

They are not interested in hearing better ways . They got burned on a 2010 audit after telling us to use the DVIR's on the logbooks when we had paper logs . Too many logs were seen with defects that were never signed off . They never learn .
