To make a long story short I am an operations manager for a small trucking company. I love my job and love what I do. However my boss has now told me that I have no choice but to become a broker as well. I know nothing about being a broker. He is telling me to cold call companies and secure accounts.....Mind you I am the only inside non driving employee for the company. Meaning I have to cover all of my trucks, do billing, invoicing, emergency, safety etc....I am currently on a salary here (literally peanuts) working nearly 70 hours a week already….but he is saying that brokering will secure my financial freedom...I am not sure how it is going to help me?! I have to do all the work while he reaps the benefits....Not to mention I KNOW NOTHING about brokering....I don't know what to say...I don't know who to talk to. All I need is one account....and then maybe get him off of my back....I don't even care if I make a dime doing it....as long as he shuts his mouth and lets me do what I was hired to do....Anyone know of any companies hiring for Operations Managers or dispatchers?? Because at this rate that is going to be my only other option. I have spent the last week calling over 500 different companies just to get told no or no response at all.....I am going to lose my mind....Thanks for letting me vent....
Vent Over! Thanks Y'all!

Forgive me lol.... looks like you're on the right path. Get your resume ready. Make sure it doesn't say anything about brokering.
I didn't mean to laugh but it sounds like your boss has you in a very "bad" way (get my drift?). You're financial freedom is still a figment in his imagination, and a long way from your wallet.
It's not easy to tell a boss to get bent but, when you find a better job, it might come real easy. He sounds like a jerk!deathB4decaf, nax, x1Heavy and 3 others Thank this. -
Yeah #### that guy. There's not a shortage of work for trucking ops guys either right now. There isn't a shortage of jobs for anyone at any part of logistics tbh.
PPLC, Tb0n3 and ForcedtoBroker Thank this. -
I have been applying....Trust and believe that! The fact that I am making 525 a week on salary while working over 70 hours a week should have been my first sign....but it is a guaranteed income so of course I have held on....Not to mention that I do absolutely love my job and my drivers are amazing....but even they have said get the heck out of here! But the fact that he is telling me that it is now going to be required for me to broker is the hardest pill to swallow! I am NOT a broker and I have NO experience whatsoever! And I absolutely want nothing to do with it. I give the brokers that have to secure their own accounts props! It is not a job for the faint at heart! I just don't see the upside to doing it at all for me. And no offense taken....If it wasn't for laughter I think I would be lying in a corner in a puddle of my own tears right now!2old Thanks this.

Get out asap, that boss/owner will always be playing that game, you will be used and then thrown away when someone cheaper comes along. I would give about no notice, just say, its all yours. But then you might be able to learn a new income source.

Exactly as been stated. As long as you're only finding freight for YOUR company's trucks, YOU ARE NOT brokering anything. Your boss wants you to find direct customers, because then YOUR company gets 100% of the billed freight shipped, rather than the broker taking 15-20% (or more) off the top before passing the load on to you for what he thinks you'll be happy with. If your company is going to grow, you need more than just brokered freight...steady work from contracts with direct shippers is the way to do it. That's what your boss is wanting. If you can't or won't do what is needed to grow WITH the company, you'll be replaced by somebody who will.

I totally agree.
I ask the moderators patience and your forgiveness while I just laugh and laugh. They say it's better than medicine.
I don't know your boss and frankly all Operations Managers aleady have enough on their plate. And they want you to do things that the Owner does not want to pay for anymore? He can darn well hire a broker for in house work. But no, he has to find a chump. That's you. 70+ hours a week in the office wiping noses, holding hands, defusing explosive drivers and dispatcher going over the edge and so on. You don't have time for this broker stuff.
Im going to spend the rest of the day working on that new medicine of laughing. You did one thing absolutely correct. Find another company to work for in that position asap.
Your boss is reaching for too much money, who is he to talk about securing YOUR financial future when HE gets potentially mountains of money not having to go to parasitical outside brokers.
I have a feeling there may even be problems with unlicensed people trying to broker loads. You might not want any of that. You already said you are losing your mind. In other words you have no future here.
Find some other company to decompress with and continue doing what you were doing before Mr Boss big mouth started this crap.2old Thanks this.
