I am one of those "grandfathers" too. I have bought a couple phones from sellers on Craigslist, etc and activated them without a hitch or disruption to my current unlimited data plan. That said...I also am one of those folks that don't need the latest & greatest like it seems is the norm nowadays. My "used" phones come from those users that must have the newest thing out sometimes being just a month or 2 old.

Yes I figure they'll try to push out the unlimited plans eventually but when they work me into that corner and/or the service sucks in an attempt to make me upgrade, I'll drop 'em and find the next best thing that works for me.

ummmm, not really. 40% of the country has absolutely ZERO V service. where my sprint phone had NO problems.

    and likewise with sprint.

one is really no better then the other as far as coverage goes.

I've had all both and have better coverage with Verizon! Granted I haven't had sprint for several years. Verizon has less spotty coverage around my house. I travel a lot of state roads and sprint had worse coverage off the interstate system. Had almost no sprint coverage across Nebraska and Wyoming. I contemplated switching to sprint, but I'm unsure how well they have improved tgeur network since I left. I've thought of getting a straight talk phone that uses sprint to try their network. We made tge decision to pay out right for phones to keep Verizon unlimited. We don't have a Qualcomm in our trucks yet so a phone with good coverage is a necessity!

they've always sucked in nebraska and wyoming. but good in oklahoma and texas where V hasn't been on my travels anyways.

it's pretty much a toss up. V has some areas and S has others.

by the way. i'm looking at my bill. 4 gigs used in 24 hours. POINT 2 gigs used for the last 2 weeks.
4.2 is what i've used so far.

I had issues with sprint on us59 in texas. We had a dedicated run across it so I got out of sprint.
