How could it fall off? Mine is bolted between the crankshaft dampener and block at 155 ft-lb torque on 6ea 10.2 grade bolts on a S60 Detroit. Dampener and balancer would have to fall off on my engine, and both are piloted pretty tight on the crank end sticking out.
Vibration-pressure plate, pilot bearing, flywheel, or balancer?

CAT had a reputation for them coming apart IIRC. Nevee saw it myself, but the old hands would tell me about it.Rideandrepair and JoeyJunk Thank this.

I guess routinely check the torque on bolts at crank end on a CAT. I guess there isn't enough room at the end of their cranks to pilot both the dampener and balancer and dampener is mounted between the crank end and balancer? You'd think a serious vibration could be felt before bolts broke or came off because both wouldn't be flush against the crank end.

The bolts isn’t where they come off, the outside ring is held to the center with rubber. They put a mark on them so you could see if the outside ring slipped. I have seen that several times.

Old truck, over a million miles, slip seating inexperienced drivers, rough roads, poor pre-trip inspections. The real question is how was the engine still running?Rideandrepair, JoeyJunk and Oxbow Thank this.

Oh I see now. My balancer is just what looks like a Balance Master for wheels. Probably made by the same company. I am mine is only steel-no rubber- and mercury filled. I was told balance masters last forever. My first thought is that it seems kind of stupid to design to use rubber.

oh well, I was trying to attach an image of all the different Balance Masters. I give up.

The older balancer with the rubber is the one that separates. The liquid filled will get hard over a period of time, course when liquid turns solid #### gets ugly. CAT doesn’t offer the rubber any longer. I do see them dug out at salvage at thrown on later model engines from time to time. I wouldn’t but it takes all kinds
