The qualcomm in my company is not pinging off of towers, it's satellite communication. It uses gps to calculate location, and has a feature to show road speed, ect. We no longer have to keep any track of our routes for road use tax, Qualcomm does it all...

Took a look at their website. They offer so much more! They can link into the truck ignition and use "OTA" (over the air) signals to disable the truck. Nice! So when you think that you are going here or there, trying to drop the truck off to quit, unauthorized trips to the house or casino, they can just shut you down. ####! Turn off your fuel card? No need! You won't even get that far. They can also monitor fuel consumption and probably change governed speed, too. Lovely!

Guess they are anticipating a whole bunch of out of pocket drivers that must be reined in. Now I know why some drivers won't work for a company that uses it at all....

All these interwebz and cheap secure connections and we're still using computer tech from the early 80's that link by satellite and cost a pretty penny to use... :biggrin_25511:

doubtful Minus. i believe what Logs was referring to is that you can send and receive personal emails from family/friends on it, that would cost you.

other than that i believe qualcomm charges the company per word or something, hence why Logs talked about keeping messages short. Logs works in the drivers log department for a company iirc.

Yep, Logs does work in the logs department of a company.

Qualcomm charges by the character for messages sent between the driver and the company, which is why most companies have their own collection of abbreviations to be used for things.

The thing with Qualcomm is that it's not merely a communications device.

That may be what it is to driver's and dispatchers, but it's a much greater tool than that for management. It's greatly simplified things for the transportation industry.

Let's say a customer calls a trucking company and asks where their load is for whatever reason. That customer's rep only has to enter in that customer's information and they'll instantly have the truck number associated with that particular load as well as that truck's location and whether or not said truck is rolling, stopped, on the proper route, and when the last time said driver took a break.

To the best of my knowledge, there's no Blackberry out there (including the one I own) that can do that.
