I considered setting up VR at the house for video games, not on road. glad you brought it up.

I couldn't agree more. Was really surprised to see 5 pages of only talk about data and plans and nothing about vr. Well one was mentioned. Speculation is that most people (...maybe older only because...) write off VR or AR because 3D and the blue red paper glasses were back in the day and it kinda failed to take off and was kind of gimmicky. I think that's sort of the stigma VR has today. I was really surprised that a driver is using vr and made this thread. Love it when drivers utilize technology for work or their own benefit or entertainment.

I will say, yes doing the roller coaster vr and some of the others in the sleeper berth can get a little queezy. I've seen the samsung gear vr's at bestbuy but haven't picked it up to test it because I'm using the google cardboard mattel viewmaster. Love it but I know the instant I pick up something like oculus it will destroy cardboard and I'll never be able to use it again. Mine doesn't have a headstrap like yours. But you are absolutely right. There are video players on the play store all kinds for 2D videos or 3D. And there's a really good one now that lets you load videos by looking at popcorn in the vr app and looking at the remote to adjust volume or skip playback without even leaving the app. I'm sure samsung probably has something better.

But what you've probably realized is the mind trick in making your eyes and senses feel like your sitting in the back of a movie theater or right in front makes it feel like you are watching a 50 inch or something tv or looking up in a planeterium type deal and there's a projector showing the content on the ceiling. The best part too is being able to use a trigger to change where you're looking and move the video box if you decide to change angles or views.

Youtube supports it too. Youtube doesn't have the fancy stuff. I think truck simulator for PC has had oculus support since a year or two ago. I'm jealous that samsung is exclusive with hulu and netflix. I don't have a tv in my cab. But the way VR is going you won't really need one being able to watch your own content or streaming in a private space sense and feeling like your watching something in a theater is incredible. Samsung is doing tv shows with certain partners exclusively for gear vr. Also a presidential debate, a wrestling match a few nights ago was in VR. The puppy bowl is going to be in VR too. Youtube has a whole channel of VR stuff and some of the games are fun and motion sickness like but there are some really cool videos apps aside from just video players and streaming services. Jaunt has Jack White, Paul Mcartney and some others with a short set of songs. 2 or 3 I think. Volbeat did some of their live shows on VR too. VR is finally picking up and the fact that samsung is helping drivers become aware of it is all the better.

To end this long post too. Nothing beat t-mo/t-maybe unlimited data with binge on and the benefit for binge on and throttling netflix, hulu, vudu, and so forth to dvd quality 420p is being able to use teethering and watch netflix, vudu, hulu on laptop, tablet and not count against tethering data. But I've used ATT and Verizon on the road before and I know they pretty much get reception everywhere and t-mobile doesn't. And that's what mcdonalds wi-fi is for, pilot free wifi (decent) in some places and wi-fi calling.

I mostly use it for Netflix because I'm not a gamer. Well okay, once in a while I'll sit in the driver's seat and do some competition shooting at the firing range, but when I do, I usually wind up answering knocks at the door from drivers wondering what I'm doing. Had a whole gaggle of drivers wanting to try it at the Ontario TA.

What I really like though, is just Netflix and the Web browser for Facebook. I used to have to lay in my bunk and twist my neck to see the laptop on the desk. Now I can be completely comfortable laying down and feel like I'm in a movie theater.

Probably one of the best things about it is there are no disturbances. You're completely in your own world...

I had to do a little more reading about, Im a little familiar with google cardboard but frankly I narrow mindly thought that vr games was all one could do with it. movies, internet and or more shed a new light. google glasses come to mind.

I got Cardboard for my niece and nephew for Christmas and messed around with it some. I can see the potential. Google is coming out with a $99 model supposedly later this year to compete with the Samsung VR and others.

I did experience some motion sickness after taking a tour of our galaxy and doing the roller coaster game. And it actually took an hour or two to go away. I see that as the biggest problem. But agree for movies and such probably would be great. And if it becomes mainstream, kids will probably start using them at a young age and develop a resistance to motion sickness. The possibilities in education are many. Think of learning how to work on your car or anything else. You could do an almost real life walk through before starting or step by step while you're doing it.

Augmented reality would probably be better for that. Something like Google Glass with a heads up display feeding you a video and instructions without completely obstructing your vision. With the totally immersive VR you could attend a class with other students if something like Skype or GoToMeeting can develop something for use with it. The best thing would be to put an end to all the cronyism and lobbying in D.C. because the congressman and senators could just stay in their own districts and conduct meetings and votes through VR. They could do that now with video streaming. I think we need to keep all the buildings in D.C. for historical purposes but just send everyone home.

And lastly the elephant in the room has not been mentioned. All I can say is that this is the most disturbing aspect. Eventually there will be very human robots to have sex with. And we may have to resort to in vitro fertilization or cloning to continue the human race.

"The image above looks like concept art for a new dystopian sci-fi film. A billionaire superman with a rictus grin, striding straight past human drones, tethered to machines and blinded to reality by blinking plastic masks. Golden light shines down on the man as he strides past his subjects, cast in gloom, toward a stage where he will accept their adulation. Later that night, he will pore across his vast network and read their praise, heaped upon him in superlatives, as he drives what remains of humanity forward to his singular vision."
