on the dyno u want a minimum of 85% of the rated horsepower and depending on the miles as low blow-by as u can get. on the print out check the idle time, check the fuel mileage. run the vin number with the dealer and see what work has been done to it and how often the truck was down. on a cummins and detroit the egr valve replacment is around 1500. the dpf replacement is around 3000 i think but to clean it is 300-500.

This gives me a good idea of what I should be looking for and the approximate costs. I appreciate your help gbrown. Have a great weekend and be safe.

I like 780's. They seem like a good trade off of cost, comfort and reliability. I would stay away from a Volvo engine. The ISX's are great engines but had problems from the factory with the EGR coolers and gaskets. But those should be fixed with better parts and not be so much of an issue anymore. I would shoot for at least a 2010 with an ISX and 13 sp. You'll out pull everyone except the heavy haulers.

I've been told that the VED16 is the way to go. Stay away from the others.
-
d16 is the worst motor out. if u get a volvo motor its a d13.
-
Hahaha and I was told to stay away from the 13! Guess it's all dependent on who you talk to.
-
the 13 is a better engine than the 16, but the ISX will give you a bigger service network.

I have a 780 with the 13 and have zero issues finding service. That is old news. We also have another truck with a cummins and it is the biggest piece of garbage I have ever seen.
So, yes, it depends on who you are talking to.
The Volvo motor is no different than any other motor. You need to find the right shop that won't bend you over. I had an EGR replaced in December for $700 plus 2 1/2 hours labor.
As far as the ride, loved it. Most comfortable truck I ever drove. I have had many opportunities to sell it and get into something cheaper for my driver but if I wouldn't do that to myself why would I want to do that to my driver?Container Hauler Thanks this. -
I doubt you will find that.

As to the question D16 or D13 ?
Unless you like high fuel bills...........take the D13.
It has more then enough power for 80 000lbs and if you don't have lead feet it will be good to you.
If you will drive team with your wife, buy the Volvo engine with I shift.
