    Hi Guys,

I just bought a 2007 Volvo 670 VNL with 1.2 M Miles for next to nothing. It has antifreeze coming out the exhaust. The dealer said they can replace a gasket for around 3k. It's my first truck and I can put some money into it because I want it to last. What is the smart route... Have the engine rebuilt or replace it with one with lower miles? If you know of any great mechanics or have advice on buying a good used engine I would appreciate it....

    Thanks for your help,

    Jake

When buying an used engine, you don't know what you are getting, it might also need a rebuild two weeks after you put it on the road.

Thanks for your reply...I got a quote for a used engines that has a 1 year warranty for parts and labor and one for 180 days...but have not read the fine details yet...and how do you really know how many miles it has on it...I suppose they can say what ever they want...

I got one guy in Chicago that says to ship the engine to him and he will rebuild it for 18k and give 1 year warranty

I would rebuild unless it's a dramatic price difference between the 2 options.

That guy in Chicago is ridiculous, shipping the engine should cost around 3-4 hundred one way, not too bad but taking it out the truck and putting it back in on average will take the shop 3 days 30 hours of labor. If you find a shop outside your area just bobtail to it drop it there and pick it up when it’s ready. Or tow it in there using another truck and a tow bar for the fifth wheel. Would make more sense if you decide to do rebuild make it inframe.

You need to find someone you can trust to do the job right the first. Warranties are worth nothing if the guy is gone the next day. Have the engine checked over, do an oil test etc. Volvo has 4 levels of engine rebuild and they do offer a warranty on the work. Also several people on this site have shops and have a good reputation. Do it right the first time so you don't have to do it again. Because it gets expensive.

Well first thing is first there is almost never that i have seen a headgasket burn out on a d12 or d13 and being that they are stainless steel its almost impossible to do so how sure are they it needs an engine, when you say there is coolant coming out of exhaust how and from where, the second thing it's not worth taking out the motor to do a rebuilt and you are much better off to do an inframe, that being said if that is done around 18K you are looking at everything with injectors and a turbo the price for d12 inframe it should be around that with new turbo and injectors and once done and if done properly you should be good to go for another 700K easy.

Not wise to buy those used “low mile” engines you see every where. Like others have said, it’s a gamble. Rebuild

Coolant coming out the exhaust could just be a bad EGR cooler.

Didn't think that D12 had them on that age of truck. Egr Valve probably.
