Old thread but I'm still looking for clarification. I'm in the market for a 780 and some of them I have found are listed as VNL42T780 but they are clearly dual rear axle like the 64T780's, which makes the above info seem wrong, or the listing wrong. Anyone know why?
Here's an example:

A 42 in the model number designation means it's a (4x2), meaning it's still a tandem rear axle, but only the first rear axle is driven, the last rear axle is a tag axle, (no driveshaft and differential) which means no interaxle differential lock/power divider.
Some 4x2 trucks have a rear differential housing and axles (but no internals or driveshaft, but has a block off plate covering where the driveshaft would connect to) so it can always be convertible to a 6x4 in the future if the future owner desires.
A 64 (6x4) means it's a tandem axle, but it has two differentials interconnected with a driveshaft, so basically it's a standard configuration that most trucks are ordered with.Last edited: Jun 8, 2018

Thanks bone, that's what I was thinking. I'm not sure if I should stay away from single driven axles (with tag axle) or not. I'm thinking for OTR work it would be a bad idea to not have the lock.
boneebone Thanks this. -

How many different models do they have? What us the real difference? Does it have anything to do with motor or transmission or are they all the same?
