2004 volvo vnl 780 3 pedal autoshift only 100000 original miles hasn't been exposed to salt or snow to much, only few times . The problem I have is when I started the truck on Monday morning out of nowhere abs light came on along with that engine ecu, transmission ecu, brake ecu ,light control module showed up on the information center. Truck lost speedometer, turbo gauge, turn signal indicator light and buzzer don't work (lights it self works fine just indicator on dashboard don't work) it works fine with 4ways on , very sensitive throttle ( can't control or keep throttle in one steady position) cruise control not working, not shifting in auto only can shift in manual mode and that is difficult to do .abs light on but seems like abs works . Checked all the fuses at battery box fuse box connections all seems to be very clean no discoloration oxidation and so on. Also checked all the ground cables, cleaned them as needed. This happened over the weekend (Saturday and Sunday was raining really hard) Friday was running perfectly fine and comes Monday this problem . Any suggestions, help much appreciated thanks.

Hi, it look like Data link communication are shorted (major) the reason the trottle pedal didn't respond normally it's because in that situation your truck is working in(Safe mode (Limp home mode)
In 2004 Volvo was using Wabco ABS system and very often the case of Abs ecu corroded and there is water ingestion inside of the ABS ECU and shorted the Data lines, my suggestion for a test disconnect the three (or four plugs If traction control equipped) on the Abs ECU, normally it is bolted on the back of the first crossmember back of the transmission.
Note: Remove the fuses of ABS is not enough because the data line wires stay connected in the ABS ECU.

Can I take the brake abs unit off and open it to inspect and see if there is any signs of corrosion or is it sealed unit. Thanks

If you look at the ABS ECU cassing you can see deep corrosion. For internal looking i don't know. Let me know your find.

Anybody worth their salt would say that CAN databus problems COULD turn out to be your worst nightmare but at first glance I see so many systems involved; V-CAN(vehicle), I-CAN(instrument), T-CAN(transmission), F-CAN(frame), C-CAN(cab) and there are more, that I would in general certainly look at fuses, (test anything questionable), relays, (swap out some ECM related relays and look for changes) the engine compartment, behind the instrument panel, kick panel (more than one location) while hooking up a diagnostic computer. Identify which systems are sending CAN fault codes and start troubleshooting "active" faults. You did mention rain which has eaten my lunch more than once, water will collect in split loom wire conduit and "null" out the signal wires (yellow and green twisted/jacketed pair), if it finds a damaged/probed opening in the wiring ANYWHERE, you'll know when you blow out or dry out the wiring, everything will return back to normal. The D-CAN is your diagnostic connector which ties all these "networks" to your diagnostic computer, now you see how "involved" this can be. Now stepping back, I want to believe something "common" between all these systems; ECM wiring, power relay's, moisture/rain. Benrab has awesome advice and I've probably been more confusing than helpful but as you do your inspection(s) and if you have access to compressed air, just keep some of this in the back of your mind, hopefully tomorrow will be a sunny day.

Good morning. First I wanna thank you guys for trying to help me out with this nightmare that I'm dealing with. Here is what I found, if I disconnect the green and yellow wires on one end of the plug and black both black wires on other plug ( don't know why they are black) right by the battery box ,my turn signal warning works I have turbo gauge working, no more brake ECU and no more light control module. Gas pedal response like it should . Here is what I don't understand , also I unplugged the 2 plugs right by drivers seat which are for the shifter (I have 3 pedal autoshift with push button) each set of plugs have data link wires green and yellow, one plug data link wires don't have continuity it shows 0.00 other plug which comes out also from the shifter side has continuity of 119.8 120.0 or so again testing both plugs on sifter side. I'm wondering if I have shifter it self shorting out and sending wrong signal to all computers. What your thoughts on that. Thanks again Andy. I'll try posting some pics.
