I work for Volvo, the New River Valley Plant in Dublin, VA. We built the vt880's which we called the "cowboy" truck. Very nice truck. However it didn't take off like it was expected to so it was phased out.

I think if it was offered again it would do well. The early D16 was plagued with issues but they have since been sorted out. Injectors and emissions crap were the main problems.....plus the early vane actuator on the turbo.
I love my XE13 but I do miss my D16 frequently. It was a real beast on the hills! And great fuel economy to boot!

Interesting discussion, I'm a Brit now living in Canada, the D16 in has been a bulletproof reliable monster for decades, in Europe, in the lovely old F16 Globetrotter and later the FH series trucks. I wasn't aware it had been modified for the North American market, but I can't say I'm surprised, European truck technology appears, to me, to be streets ahead of the market here. It gives me hope of better trucks to come. :)

Yes we are way behind. Volvo announced in January that they are no longer making the d16.

I think the loss of the D16 was a bad move for vo-mack, i wanted to spec my next truck with a new XE16 iShift 2.64s etc .... Guess that's gone now!!

Does anybody know if or when Volvo plans to release a new truck? They haven't changed the style since what 04?

They just released a new truck seen here...

My guess would be there is something similar coming real soon to the bigger vnl series.

    BoostedTeg Thanks this.

So basically there is no change other than a bit of cosmetics. What I'm absolutely convinced of is that the price will increase because of LED lights and few buttons on the steering wheel. Kinda sad.

Volvo has been using LED lights for years now in VNL. That's not new... Only the design and styling to replace the antiquated VNM series..

    IT'S long overdue....
Dash buttons are still disappointing in the US models, the Europeans get excellent looking dashes with switches that look like they came out of a BMW

What were the differences in the euro spec versus the us spec d 16? Dad had huge trouble from his 2006. Yes it was heavy and unreliable. Fought pressure in the coolant probably injector cups or head gasket. Injectors coming apart and the sticking turbo. Maybe someone could change it for a euro head and simpler turbo. Dad gave up on his and it just sits in his shop.
