Turbo compounding has been done decades ago, long, long before the 90s.Turbocharged aircraft engines were using compounding in the late 1930s.

May I ask where is the extra 50hp at?
Those turbo compounded d13 are rated @ 455 in the strongest variant… They don’t even offer 475 or 485, forget about 500hp that regular d13 comes with.
So it’s the stronger engine just that the data shows otherwise. SMH.Another Canadian driver Thanks this. -
The TC recovers wasted exhaust energy and puts it back into the drivetrain through the flywheel.
It works amazing and against another 455 XE or the 500/1850 , it has outpulled it every time.
Something makes me think they underrated the public spec like they used to do with the 460 mack E7 motors.
It pulls way harder than a regular 455... The bottom end Torque is stupid strong on the TC. Mind you.. I've got first gen, there's the new G2 that's improved with wider rpm, increased MPG and higher compression than my 2020 model.Another Canadian driver, NWAF, 86scotty and 2 others Thank this. -
Given that this engine in now standard I find it hard to believe that it outpulls everything. The new style Volvo’s I see on the road are usually last up the hill somehow. And I have a an old 500hp d13 which I consider weak as hell, still passes those new ones.
I guess the only way to find out would be to drive one.Another Canadian driver and KB3MMX Thank this. -
Check out Provost Motorsports on YouTube. He has this engine in an 860 and loves it. I think he is averaging around 9 mpg's and is also impressed with it's pulling power.

I also just watched his video on MPG and while at it he was going 15-35 mph uphill in Oklahoma with 43k lb in the box. That’s no power to me, I can hardly think of interstate hills in Oklahoma that should bring you down to this.
Yes his MPG is way better than mine (with regular D13 500 hp) when he is empty or light, It seems very close when fully loaded though.Last edited: Sep 5, 2021

There's plenty of cheap fleet spec trucks though with lower specs and more governing that get passed constantly. The added cost of TC previously kept the megas from using it..
Things are changing though.
Wish they offered the 500TC in USA and the Dual Clutch euro iShift with instant shifting.
To note; my TC truck has way more bottom end pulling power than my X15 - 565/2050 Cummins truck did in the 389 Pete. The 565/2050 X15 was Disappointing after having Volvo D13s in the past.Another Canadian driver and 86scotty Thank this.
