True but my big thing is my rig is my money maker and until its paid off and i have a second truck id be scared ####less of breaking it with a hamfisted bubba level job lol. As for budget that is true though trying to get the money for the engine ontop of all the issues my current engine and truck have has been pure pain. Im making enough to keep ahead of it, pay bills and even finance a house....but beyond that not a whole hell of a lot left in the tank for "oh crap" repairs or extra tools to unbork something i mess up XD

We have a 10 ton front loader and we have a ton of chain. Figure with that and the hook points on its bucket moving the engine will be the easy part. Plan was to attach hooks to the lift points and then cross a catch chain below the engine since the lift points on 6NZs are known to be iffy and lift directly up and slot it in. The MX 13 if it falls and smashes into the ground i really dont care, id probly take a leak on it at this point tbh. Im still waffleing if the $1200 for the core is worth more then putting it out on the rifle range......

A thought for helping engine lift hooks survive. All of the hooks that I have seen damaged appeared to be caused by excessive side force, which I assume was because of the angle that a short chain would pull on them when lifting from the center. Normally a long chain is rather unhandy because of the amount of head room required. However a long chain will make it much easier to position the engine when you push on it because it will swing easier. To avoid the short chain pulling sideways on the hooks and not use a long chain you can take the short chain and run it through a piece of pipe or square tubing that is the right length to make the ends of the chain lift straight up on the lifting hooks. Then use another chain in the center or balance point of the load to lift the pipe and engine. Put a good c clamp on each side of the lifting chain to prevent an accidental slide on the tube. We usually use 3 inch by 1/4 wall square tube because i always seem to have scraps of that laying around…one benefit of being in the fabrication business.
I &can take some pictures if you need to see it. I feel like I made a complicated deal out of something simple.

Nahh i think ive seen what your talking about before and good info. We will make sure to do it. Me and a buddy are thinking we may do a gantry instead of the loader. Local truck shop just closed up since the owner retired and we are going to make an offer on his 10,000 pound outdoor gantry. Its about 30 years old so we are hopeing he will take $2000 if we also do the removal outselves.

Towards the rebuild do you happen to know where i can get the tech manuals and/or a rebuild guide for a 6nz? Id feel much happier about my chances of a correct rebuild and swap if i had refrence materials that arent youtube lol.

That would seem like a fair price on the gantry if it’s something decent.
I assume you’re looking for a service manual for the 6nz and not about actually swapping it. I am pretty sure I have a paper book for it. But I won’t part with it, I would be willing to send pictures of pages you want but depending on how much you need/want that might not be too practical. I usually have pretty good luck buying those kind of books on ebay. Just be careful that they’re selling an actual book and not a ####ty scan of it. As far as free information manualslib is maybe slightly sketchy but often has pdf/ scans of real books. Personally I would try to get the real book because I hate computer books, it’s so much more time consuming to find what you want. Reliance also has torque values on their website for most engines but that’s all they will have.

I wouldn't mind a picture of the cover and first page so i can compare it to an ebay listing and make sure im getting the real thing if i go that route. As towards the manuals yes thank you, i meant the service manual i could not think of the correct term so went with tech lol.

For the swap i know paccar has a literal step by step book they use for their techs replaceing a blown engine and what all the torques are and what needs to connect where. and was unsure if cat had something simular.

Also are the service manuals something you can get directly from cat? I know paccar sell them but my local dealer wanted $4500 for the MX13 one....so big yikes lol

Nothing wrong with calling it a tech manual, I just wanted to be on the same page
Maybe I will remember to look Monday for that book. Yes they can be had directly from cat…or used to be. I bought one a long time ago for a cat loader…it was pretty cashy, but a far cry from 4500! Yikes I can’t believe anyone would pay that.

You think thats bad? go look at davie 4 software sometime. Its absolutely bonkers $3000 a month for the FULL subscription plus $8000 for the hardware or you can get the 1 year heavily limited software for $3500 which lets you do a regen and read codes....thats it. Paccar hates people working on their own rigs and makes sure unless you own like 500 of them its non viable to do so.

And good to know. Ill take my serial number in and see if i can get the manuals i need. If they are anything like our D9s manual they will make my life SO much easier.

And that type of thing is exactly why I despise running anything with a computer. So far we’re all mechanical except one truck that will be soon.

Yup i regret buying this pete for so many reasons. Shoulda got the westernstar....but if i can rebuild the 6nz myself and source a good 2050 torque 18 speed and then install both i can likely unbork this truck and make a good solid hybrid that gives me the best of both worlds for around $45K.

I do know when this truck is fully paid off at the end of the year if i commit to the rebuild instead of the new mack im going to gut the sleeper and rebuild it because whoever ordered this truck was a moron and i want more cabnet and/or shelf space.
