Sometimes they come on sometimes they don’t. If they’re on and working, they stay working fine. Sometimes I’ll turn them on and nothing. Flip “on“, “off”, “2”, “4” and “6” and still nothing. Where and what should I look for?

I had a problem where I wasn’t getting full power when the Jakes were on, took the valve cover off and it was a loose wire on the jake. mile marker 27 Thanks this.

How did you determine which valve cover to look under? Mine does it no matter which setting.

What year is the KW? what series of N14?
 Does the cruise control work?
-

Quickest way would be lap top or Pro link. To see if your clutch switch, idle validation switches are functional all the time. Next would be to check the plugs to all three jake housings on the right. Then check internal wiring under valve covers. Keeping in mind battery connections and cab/chassis grounds should be checked before trouble shooting any electrical issue. Last electrical option is failing ecm. Which N14's are known for. Mechanical could be worn/leaky jake cyclinder. Your gonna have to do some troubleshooting shooting.

My neighbor hooked a jumper wire wile I pressed the accelerator and then let off. Turned out to be the one closest to the firewall on my Volvo 770. Once we took the valve cover off, we could see the wire was loose. We just crimped the end so it was a tighter fit on the solenoid.mile marker 27 Thanks this.

	‘93 W9 with Celect.

The Celect N14 the Jake brake was controlled by two relays in the fuse box.
one relay for the center head and one for the front and back head, if I remember
correctly there is also a fuse for them. I would pull the relays and fuse and make sure the connectors are not corroded. I have seen the rivets that hold the terminals on the dash
switches come loose and make an intermittent connection as well.
If the cruise control and the fast idle work then the brake and clutch switches are good.
Does the cruise control and fast idle work?

No they do not work either
