Depends on the company.Werner it could be hrs. Then it depends where your at and the more drivers their are the longer you have to wait. You'll hear this alot during your carreer( be patient)
I typically don't wait to be dispatched. My time isn't spent waiting for them to do their job. I imagine you are sitting at a rest stop somewhere? I imagine too that you probably have some sort of computer in your truck from which they can dispatch you. If they use your phone, are they paying your phone bill? Lots of questions... maybe you could ponder them while you're waiting.
I spent 5 days twice in 32 years of driving, both working for Sam Tanksley in the 80's. And 2 days a few times over the years. I actually didn't mind sitting for 2 days, however I didn't know I was going to sit that long in the beginning, you know, one of those "call me in an hour" things (pre q-comm days).
The most important thing to realize is that Night/Weekend dispatchers A: Generally handle MANY more drivers than the daytime people. B: Do not give a rat's arse that you are sitting.
Wherever a student may end up driving is not going to want or even allow the driver to "look for freight" so he doesn't need to factor this concept into any decision making processes in the beginning.
I think it all depends since a guy who started at the same time as me always sits whereas only two times I had to wait a few hours to get dispatched. Every other time I have preplans waiting and the second I am empty I have a new assignment there waiting. If there was no such thing as hos I think I would never stop lol.
The way PAM got around some of that night/weekend stuff was to have me pick up on Thursday. Then deliver it on Monday. Sometimes as far as 350 miles away...... but usually 300 or less.
