That 389 isn't getting any newer and look at used truck prices crashing. In your shoes I'd have swapped that fuel suck barn door for the newer aero ride about 2 seconds after they gave the option.
Fleets are riding this thing out just fine with plenty of work. I read an article that freight volumes today are way higher than pre-pandemic 2019. Just the explosion of new authorities is still around. Things are not anywhere near as bad as it can get for loadboard freight either. I see 10x the available loads now everywhere I look that I saw during the pandemic in early spring of 2020. Which is still terrible because that's way less than half the volume I see in a normal year. Just my anecdotal from the past 13+ years.
5.3 to 5.5 mpg pulling a reefer is lighting a match to some serious amounts of cash. You can easily get 7 without hardly trying, most people get much better than that. I like old style trucks too but they are way obsolete for typical freight. Fuel isn't ever going to get any cheaper, won't matter who is the president either. Regulations are making sure of that and they're not going away, they're getting worse.
Waiting on New Trucks thread.

Is the only way they get 7-8 mpg with the 455 hp ? What if you put a 585 Cummins in one of them ?
285 mack
455 3406E
600/2050 C-15
those 3 engines take me back 40 years. I’ll not go backwards to a 455 . -
I feel pretty confident my 389s aren’t going to plummet in value like a Cascadia or Volvo will in this market.
And what the heck on APUs. I called to see if they were available and the price. They are available and I got quoted $15.5K. Last July I paid $13K. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised but that ROI for an APU needs to reran to see if it’s worth it at that price. -
I feel that’s going to improve as we come off winter fuel as that’s the last 30 days average. I also have a next Gen 680 sitting that would have brought that average higher.larry2903, D.Tibbitt, RedForeman and 5 others Thank this. -

It’s a little ghetto perhaps, but a 300 dollar air conditioner and a 800 dollar generator does just fine. And a webasto heater for the winter.
Short Fuse EOD, bzinger, IH9300SBA and 7 others Thank this.
