A lot of good information but not all information is good for every operation. I like to pick the minds of a few of them from time to time. It is one of many things I follow on trucking to try and get better.

RedForeman, Feedman and ducnut Thank this.

All depends on your set up and legal weights in states. These trucks are set up wit 14,200 front axle to keep the gap at a min.

    ducnut Thanks this.

RGN is a trailer kind. RAR is the Gear Ratio.

That is the reason for the 14200 front. They try and have no more than 13" from back of fairings to front of trailer.

    ducnut Thanks this.

So " removable goose neck" and "rear axle ratio," correct?

RedForeman, Oxbow and ducnut Thank this.

The aerodynamics pulling heavy equipment is 90% predicated by the equipment being hauled, not the truck except for running empty. Low side skirts and bumpers don't play well with going off road into jobsites, so they can't really be used. Wide load mirror extentions are required as well, so the benefit of an aero truck is pretty much limited to the hood. Then one is pulling a lot more weight, and often going slower due to that weight, so the aerodynamic benefit is reduced yet again. Aero trucks with smaller grill openings do not cool as well, which requires the fan to run more, which further minimizes the aero benefit. And finally, sucking all the intake air through one smaller air filter under the hood renders the engine somewhat less efficient than having two larger filters mounted externally, which rarely matters at 80k, but can make a noticeable difference at 130K climbing a grade at 25 mph.

This is getting out in the weeds relative to the topic, but I think it supports the argument that one size does not fit all.

So do they slide the 5th wheel all the time then? Assuming you can’t turn very tight with that little of gap?

gentleroger, Siinman and Oxbow Thank this.

You’re not going to pull this with a 2.50 rear and a down sped D13. Compound turbo or not. An aero truck ain’t doing squat when the load is 14-6 tall and 12-6 wide and you have 28 tires on the ground
