He could do a 2.47 direct drive but not with an overdrive on a Volvo.

The DD15 has been ran like that, for awhile. One DD15 company has a fleetwide average over 9mpg, using this downsped powertrain. Rumor is they tried a <2.00 rearend, but, I don’t believe it worked how they intended, because they pulled it. They’re right up the street from my employer’s HQ. Unfortunately, my employer seems oblivious to the goodness going on up there.

This Cascadia I'm in has 2:28 rears. Won't be in it much longer tho swapping out for a Volvo soon.

Well alot of this stuff goes over my head i will be the first to admit.... But I don't really understand the argument for open deck world that an aero truck is going to get better mileage... I have run 15 and 16 cascadias and 18 and 20 t680 kenworths and a 16 386 Pete and now a 13 389 pete. And not one of those trucks has ever got better than 6mpg at any point in time over the course of 100k miles.. All in open deck world running out west... I cant say on the 389 yet because i just barely started running it. But i imagine its not going to do much better or worse.. But the rest are all relitively the same in the long run. Give or take .5 mpg... I think there is to many variables in the open deck world to accurately say that one truck over the other is better.. I have done cross country trips and gotton close to 9pmg going east. And 5 mpg coming back the other way because the loads are aerodynamically completely different than eachother. In a van or reefer this doesnt exist right? So we can say this fuel saving concept only applies to box trailers

It’s not exclusive to box trailers. I have a friend in MT with a 4 axle Cascadia that pulls a 4 axle Wilson cattle trailer and he’s a little above 6 with his setup when others are high 4’s and low 5’s. I follow a guy on Instagram that pulls food grade tanks with Mack Anthems and he has drivers averaging over 9.

I’d be curious if TMC saw a change going from hoods to 579’s.

But the point is those trailers never change shape or form.. Open deck has a different load on it everytime. like flatbed or step or rgn.. Structural steel is not going to get the same mpg as a excavator or a tarped load of shingles.. You could actually get worse fuel mileage with a load of stirofoam roofing panels than u could a load of bricks. Because of the aerodynamics of the load... Regardless of what truck is pulling that load .. Whats loaded on the deck determines what the fuel mileage is going to be ..i guess u could argue if running the same load under the same routes 1 truck would be more efficient than the other in theory but. I dont necessarily think its reality on open deck... Theres to many variables involved.. The guys i was running out of the quaries with all had hood trucks and we hauled the same stuff on the same roads to the same places and we were all within .5mpg of eachother. But they left me in the dust running those mountains in the northwest everyday because they had 200 more hp then me. That is just my own experience with it.
