Where in the country is he making $18 an hour driving a forklift?. I know it isnt South Florida.

I get paid well for the work I actually do as a truck driver. I have also driven forklifts in warehouses for decades so can say with confidence that I would much rather drive a truck than a forklift, even if the forklift job paid more.

 

12 hour shifts
5 days a week

I’ve done that and more. Come home. Take shower. Eat. Sleep. Go back to work.
That’s all there is for those 5 days.
Then spend the weekend resting to address fatigue.
That’s no life. Might as well be on the road. Don’t have to drive all the way home just to sleep. Bed is one foot away.

 

I don’t want to work 68 hours a week no matter what it is.

 

At .55 cpm, 65 mph, life ain't so bad. Problem is where to park for my 10...

The carriers don't give a crap, they will fill the seats with people who never made more than $300 in a week and it seems they do that all day long.

The easy licensing, the revolving door and the mentality this is just a job ... there won't be any changes in the next 20 years if any.

 

Trust me I'm in no way shape or form implying that Forklift Operating is a better career. I for one got my CDL to steer far away from any type of warehouse work. But that also has to do with my passion for driving. To attract people who dont quite share that passion but want simply to establish a career, you have to make the pro's outweigh the cons. And right now, it doesn't seem like the money is worth the headaches to people thinking about getting into the industry. We just need to be paid what we're worth. Vets, owner ops, and rookies alike

OP, look at some of the threads in this forum. OTR is the last stop on the homeless train for many. Trucking companies have zero need to pay you what you think you're worth. If you quit there's 20 felons, ex hookers, and guys that need six months notice to pass a drug test waiting to take your place for even less than you're making.

 

Some of us can't understand why anyone would want to be a forklift driver in a warehouse or even work in a warehouse. To me and some others, that job is slow suicide.
Was reading about Merchant Seaman jobs, of which I have my document for that, but never used it. The new seamen report aboard their first ship and the old timers immediately tell them not to do it, because they're wasting their lives and not being fair to their families. The older seaman blabber away making fools of themselves, when they do that job voluntarily and can leave anytime.
Yet, the same with truckers, the older seaman & older truckers give advice that they won't take themselves.
The same old blabber from seaman & truckers; "Uhhh, I'm too old to start over, this is all I know." That's a lousy excuse to use; you had your chance years ago and didn't do anything about it.
