Well, pretty new to the forum, figured I'd chime in. I'm 25 years old, got my CDL through Central Refrigerated 4 years ago this October, been with J.B. Hunt the last 3 years DCS home every night M-F weekends off 55k/year. A co-worker told me about Wal-Mart having a hiring event in Desoto, TX (I live in McKinney) with a first year average salary of $85k so I told my boss I was going to go check it out. Arrived in Desoto on Tuesday at 0700 on the first day of the event and they were extremely friendly and I started going through the process. I hadn't applied online so I quickly applied through their system (15 min) and started the wait for the interview. After about 30-45 minutes, I did my interview which wasn't very stressful, pretty standard questions that professional drivers shouldn't have a problem with (7 second following distance, plenty of rest...etc). Walmart as well as J.B. Hunt expect you to use the S.M.I.T.H. System driving techniques, luckily they've been drilled into my mind. Anyways, after passing the interview, I was immediately driven to the yard to do a Pre-trip and road test (wasn't expecting to do a Pre-trip in my slacks and button down shirt, but hey lol). The atmosphere was very relaxed although I was nervous, but I only missed a couple items like checking the exhaust piping for corrosion, and passed without issue. Next came the driving test, the safety manager testing me was very cool and I wasn't nervous at all, although maybe I should have been seeing as how the guy that tested at the same time as me failed for having a 6 second following distance. Nothing wrong with a company being serious about safety. After I passed the tests, it was back to the event where I received my conditional offer. I was given info on how to start my background check, and did so as soon as I got home. Friday, I got a call from J.B. saying that Wal-Mart had made an inquiry and asking if there was anything that they could do to keep me with them, I told them I hadn't even been offered the job yet and I'd have to see. Well, today I checked the status of my background check, and it's already switched to competitive! Things are looking great so far, hopefully I'll be a member of the Wal-Mart team soon! Just wanted to post my experience for other like minded drivers.

Congratulations !!!! I believe you would be one of the youngest Walmart drivers. You have everything to be proud of.

It must be cool to be so young, and get your last job !!!

Please keep us updated on your progress and thoughts. :)

Thank you Ma'am! The funny thing is, I was actually selling electronics at Wal-Mart when I went to get my CDL. They actually kept me as an employee while I was in driving school in case it didn't work out, I'd still have a job! I've been extremely lucky in my experience with Walmart, Central, and J.B. Hunt. They've all been extremely good to me. There's definitely a huge amount of pride in being in the hiring process with a company that is notoriously one of the best in the industry! I'll definitely keep you posted!

"I believe" Is what she said. That's also the same thing that the four distribution center managers said. I have no idea, I'm sure somebody younger has started with Walmart before. I'll be happy to get the job regardless of my age!

That is wonderful! My husband will be starting June 29th at the Opelousas, LA DC. I was reading your post and I know exactly how you feel! I would also keep checking to see if the status changed, LOL! It looks like your husband and mine are almost on the same timeline for the hiring process:
    4/29/25 Phone Interview
    5/11/15 Pre-Trip/Driving Test/Physical
    5/13/15 Background Submitted
    5/31/15 Background Status -Competitive
6/5/15 Got the call for date of orientation!
This forum has been great for all of the information. Good luck and take care!:)
