I've actually lost friends because I will not use my phone while driving. Even though they are also drivers who have to abide by similar policies. I guess they just don't understand what it's like to work for a company where what you could lose would be so much more than you could lose anywhere else. Of course they also think I made a mistake and I was selfish for going back over the road and leaving my family behind and my home every day job...ignorance is bliss so they say...

i have friends that are telling me the same thing jim.because im trying to get on with walmart and leave my seniority, vacation time and being home every night and off weekends. but i feel its the right thing for me. im sure you and your family discussed it like i have with my daughter. some people just cant stand to see people try to better themselves. my daughters mom actually thinks im stupid for trying to leave my job. says why would you want to be gone, how are you gonna have any kind of life. even tries to say what if you leave your job and get on there and it doesn't pay what they say. so i feel ya on that jim.

Hell, it was my WIFE'S idea! She had a Walmart driver come through her checkout (she recently quit so she'd always be home when I am) and she was talking to him, he told her about the job and she TOLD me to apply LOL. But we did extensively discuss it, and it's anything BUT selfish...I sacrificed my time at home in order to better their lives. The selfish thing to do would have been to turn down this job to be home every day. Some people just can't understand, the way they think is backwards.

im willing to take a job and move half way across the country to be closer to my daughter while she attends college. trying to get a better job to help her pay for it. my ex is staying here to keep her job i think that is way more selfish than what i am trying to do.

Same with me. I gave up a high seniority job with UPS Freight, home every night Monday thru Friday, off every weekend and holiday to come here. My wife was concerned initially if I was making a wise decision. Now, my wife is thrilled I am working here even though I am away 4 nights a week. She has seen how much more calm and relaxed I have become. I tell her the culture here at Walmart is the reason. I have more quality time with my family, whereas before I was home more, yet felt fatigued and mentally tired. The schedule and money at UPS Freight was good, but it in recent years it became a "look forward to Friday and dread Monday" routine type job. A lot of people think UPS, wow, that is a great job to work. Well, if you work there and see behind the scenes, it really is not. Safety wise, they are mediocre at best. Their CSA score is nothing to be proud of at all. What they have going for them is the brand name, UPS. To the average person on the street, most would think UPS is great and Walmart Transportation is a reflection of the entry level associates working in the stores, which is not the case. Regardless, I know who Walmart Transportation is, I am happy to be here, and look forward to many happy years here! :)

While SHE may not be selfish for not moving, she certainly has no right (nor does anyone else) to imply that YOU are. I really have been told I was selfish. Amazes me how it's selfish to make a sacrifice to help someone else. Hope you get on, it's a great 'selfish' job LOL. You definitely sound like you have the attitude and demeanor for a Walmart driver. Best of luck to you.

Yeah, and Jim you probably would agree, the job is much better than we expected it would or could be. You really do have to be working here to see the whole picture.

thanks jim I hope I do too been a long wait but Its getting closer. the lady from home office that called me for the Loveland interview was extremely friendly and after explaining my situation and why I wanted to wait to interview for the florida dc. she was super nice about it. she said lets go for florida then and reassured me it wasn't a big deal and that they would call me back 5-7 days after the posting closes.

Tom, couldn't have said it better. I really didn't have anything against my previous employer, but like you said, it became a look forward to Friday and not look forward to Monday job. The pay was inconsistent, and I was always asking for extra work, just to be told there was nothing else to do while watching our trailers go down the road on the back of a contractor. THAT was a really sore subject for me, they said they had to promise the contract carriers a certain amount of work to keep them happy so they would be there when we got busy. I don't know any contract carrier that would turn down the work just because they were not previously given a certain amount during a slow time. That's one thing I definitely like about Walmart, among everything else of course, is that we get the work first, and the dedicated contract drivers get the work that's left over. That's how it should be, take care of your own first! Walmart gets it, it's a shame other companies don't.

As for the public thinking we are on the level of the store associates, I haven't seen that yet. Well the majority of people are ignorant and inpatient, there is such a higher percentage of people being courteous to me now then when I was with any other company. I have people give me thumbs up, wave, arm-pump, call me sir, open doors for me and even let me out. I also agree with what you say about how relaxed you are when you are home. I actually never really thought about that until you mentioned it. Gave me pause for thought, and reflecting back on how it was before compared to how it is now, there definitely is a big difference. Besides actually looking forward to coming back to work (ok, maybe not looking forward to it but not dreading it), the quality of home time is definitely much better now. And my wife has also noticed a big difference in my demeanor.
