One of the best perks (and there's a bunch of em) of the job IMO is that you're the "captain of your ship" at Walmart. This means a few things one of which is you actually get paid for every mile the truck turns and no-one tells you what route you have to take to get the job done. Versus every other job in trucking where you only get paid from point A to point B on a particular route and those miles are usually shorted. If I need to detour an accident or whatever I just drive around it and don't have to ask anybody if it's ok or any of that. If it's 50 more miles or whatever doesn't matter, it pays. If there's another job in trucking that does that I've never heard of it.

I'm linehaul at Old Dominion and we get paid for all out of route miles. Nobody tells me what route I have to take.Stonehjl Thanks this.

OD is one of the better ones I shouldn't be surprised. A lot of LTL drivers would have to get it approved to be paid. And you have a schedule to keep so you have to be careful with straying too far?

I've been here 12 years and trucking 27 total. This is by far the best trucking job I've ever had. They don't say anything about anything. My son drives for Walmart that's why I occasionally eaves drop on this thread.

I've been at it 25 years and year and a half with Walmart. I wouldn't trade this job for any other. No stress, no tight schedules. Saftey isn't just a word. Easy money.
Stonehjl, Gomer1969 and hope not dumb twucker Thank this. -
Running linehaul I don't have a tight schedule at all. I'm on a 628 mile meet and turn. I'm governed at 70mph so from gate to gate it takes me 9hrs/50mins to turn it. I work 52hrs a week and home every day. We rebid every 6 months so we can switch our schedules to fit our home lives. Trust me I know all about easy money .Stonehjl Thanks this.
