    Just wanted to add,

I see from your listing the age you have posted, I am only 39 in comparison, however I had the benefit of an older generation. My parents are old enough to be your parents as well. We came from the south where working hard to achieve anything was the only way. Growing up in the north gave the experience of using my brain as well as my hands to achieve. (The ethic that has been lost on this next generation)

I applaud you on what you have explained about the rearing of yours. Mine have made it to a point in their lives that even thought they are not doctors, lawyers or superstars, but they are not dead, jail or baby dramas.

The parents of today and especially tomorrow are faced with a challenge that I would not wish on anyone. These are troublesome times and does not look any better in the future.

    Again just had to :biggrin_25514:You..............................J

    CooL!
Same here. I call that interesting.

I hear that to be successful, all one has to be is smarter than a 5th grader.
    Can that be considered "work"?
How hard can that be? :biggrin_25525:
And I'm thinkin' that sometimes those kids are inventing those scenes the machines are re-enacting.
Call it "research" if you will, ...... but
    I call that scary. :biggrin_2551:

    Follow the Money Trail.
    I say it louder.
Instant money accepted at most retailers.

Our hero movie stars demonstrate how to go from the outhouse to the penthouse on a DVD that has a run-time of about 90 minutes.
I'm sure most kids today wouldn't really mind putting up with a two hour, entertaining movie.
But in reality, they want it yesterday.
Same with a lot of adults --- who may also be kids, too -- and some of THOSE kids who are raising kids of their own, and ON their own, ..... already.

I think Jeff Gordon summed it up pretty well when, several years ago, he was asked about his apparent "instant success".
He answered something like -- YeAH!
It only took me 15 years to become an over-night success.

And very fine words they were, they were, sir,
    Yes they were.
    Thanx. :biggrin_25514:

    Kinda does make ya go
    Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

They don't tell you about that for a good, business reason.
Follow the Money Trail -----------> <------
To do so would certainly affect the sale of basketballs, hoops and related profit making items.
    Ya reckon.
I mean, who'd buy a basketball if they knew it wasn't Magic seeds for a plant they can climb on? :biggrin_25525:

    YuP!
And then, there are artists who the stars try to imitate, --- with varying degrees of success.
Depending on how one defines "success", I guess.

Well, I can say *NO* ---
but I have to say *YES* -- this time.

Again, ..... follow the Money Trail.
Sports stars have become athletic salespersons of their sponsor(s).
Whether they dribble a ball, pitch a ball, whack a ball, or kick the dern thang --- sports and their stars are just the transportation devices for their sponsor's product messages.

    Think I'm blowin' smoke?
Check out race cars, like NASCAR,
They're rollin' billboards with a spokesperson behind the wheel, ... makin' millions.

I've said the the definition of a NASCAR fan is,
A transportation device for a full wallet.
Which will be much lighter upon exiting the track. Might even be down to the plastic.

    Sports?
    NaW ---- it's become entertainment.

Ya reckon there's a speck-0-truth to the rumor that our illegal aliens really ARE doin' the work no Americans want to do?
    Like Big truck truck drivin'
    and construction.

I've heard those folks call that "their freedom".
While others might call it a (tax) burden.
And politicians call it gathering votes.

By Golly ----- You better not!!
And what are you "sorry" about?

BTW, where did you get your soapbox?
I've been lookin' for one just like it. :biggrin_25525:

I imagine so,for quite a few people. Else McDonalds would attend job fairs

I call that correct. I'm afraid I don't recall the game, but it was one of those race to doom things (Who here remembers the movie DeathRace 2000?) where I recognized scenes from years before the game came out.

With no training - as in, no role models. Their parents are products of the 60s these days - the "what, me worry?" generation.

Of course, it doesn't help that in this economy, both parents pretty much *have* to work to get by , much less set any aside.

    Lol - yeah

Oh - they'd still sell like nobody's business. And just as many would languish in the bottom of closets as do now.

I'll generalize that every pro player has a passion for the game. The stars possibly just have better innate capability. I think a large part of the problem is that their goal was simply to GET to pro status. Once there, it's like a ship without a rudder... they don't know where to go, so they end up on the rocks.

They're constantly told how good they are (and, to be honest, they are) at what they do. You have to have your head screwed on *very* tight in order for that to not warp your outlook on the world. Usually, it takes an external influence to nail your feet to the floor.

But that doesn't stop Jimmy Junior from grabbing a <insert game equipment here> and devoting every waking hour to making the team.

Yeah - if you find a working example, follow it. Guess it depends on how you define 'working' :)

Ok - I have to bow to you on NASCAR. For all that I did some racing when I was young and stupider, or that I'm (very distantly) related to Nigel Mansel.. what I know about racing these days is.. well. Hard to go down from "nothing"

I do have to disagree with those who don't call it a sport, though. And it's very definitely a team effort.

    That's all it's ever been.

yah reckon? I know *I* don't want to spend my days working on a truck farm. And I won't do it for $2/hour. But then, I do have alternatives.

    re welfar:

I've heard the same thing. Right along with the concept that they are due 'reparations' for what our grandparents did to their grandparents.

This is a family friendly board, so I cannot use the appropriate language here.. but let's just say those ideas are post-processed bovine feed.

Actually, I'd say the politicians call it "looking after their constitutents". The objective viewer calls it as he sees it: Buying votes

well, this isn't supposed to be a political forum, I don't think...

built it myself. Took planks from here and there, but it's MY soapbox. I did buy the screws to hold it together, though.

You'd be disagreeing with the new head Poobah of NASCAR, Brian France --- he said NASCAR is no longer a sport, rather, it's big business entertainment.

I say bovine excrement, which, I think, is about the same as post-processed bovine feed?

    Shock -

Just because it's big business/entertainment doesn't mean it's a sport. Pro wrestling is big business/entertainment - but not anywhere near a sport.

NASCAR has simply crossed the line (apparently) from semi-pro to pro, if you will. There's now real money involved.

    Jash -

I do appreciate y'all handing over the podium. Saves me from grabbin' up a tire iron and smackin' y' in d' haid.

Not that I would do that, really.

    Really!

Cattle prods are much harder to trace.

There you go rufflin feathers again............. :biggrin_25525:

I know, I know..... your comment was just made in the context of answering the question….. but I am still a teacher so I can’t resist…….. :biggrin_25522:

This country would actually be in BETTER condition if every citizen HAD a 5th grade education.
What most people don’t realize is the average citizen does not! :biggrin_25513:

I seriously considered posting ALL the standards for the four core academic areas but it would end up taking about 10 pages so I am just going to give you guys links below. (You really need to take a look if you don't know what is expected of our children.)

I do want to ask…….. how many truckers do you honestly think can do the following 5th grade math skills?.... and I am only taking one from each area to make my point, there are actually 28 more….
    • 1.3 Understand and compute positive integer powers of nonnegative integers; compute examples as repeated multiplication.
    • 2.3 Solve simple problems, including ones arising in concrete situations, involving the addition and subtraction of fractions and mixed numbers, and express answers in the simplest form.
    • 1.5 Solve problems involving linear functions with integer values; write the equation; and graph the resulting ordered pairs of integers on a grid.
    • 1.4 Differentiate between, and use appropriate units of measures for, two-and three-dimensional objects.
    • 2.2 Know that the sum of the angles of any triangle is 180° and the sum of the angles of any quadrilateral is 360° and use this information to solve problems.
    • 1.1 Know the concepts of mean, median, and mode; compute and compare simple examples to show that they may differ.
    • 1.1 Analyze problems by identifying relationships, distinguishing relevant from irrelevant information, sequencing and prioritizing information, and observing patterns.
    • 2.3 Use a variety of methods, such as words, numbers, symbols, charts, graphs, tables, diagrams, and models, to explain mathematical reasoning.
    • 2.4 Express the solution clearly and logically by using the appropriate mathematical notation and terms and clear language; support solutions with evidence in both verbal and symbolic work.
    • 3.2 Note the method of deriving the solution and demonstrate a conceptual understanding of the derivation by solving similar problems.
If everyone thinks the above looks a little daunting for a 10 year old…… realize that 5th grade math has one of the shorter lists of standards. :biggrin_25521:

The real problem in this country is that some students are coming out of 5th grade knowing MORE than what is required (believe it or not) while a large population of children are coming out of the same grade level with the knowledge of an average 1st grade student. :biggrin_2551:

If you guys have the time………. Can you fix that one for me? Please ?? :biggrin_255:
