I do not support this law, but it is not taking away any rights.

Your right to post under some ridiculous nickname like. . . Anonymous. Not "Hi my name is (name) and I live at (address)"

While I agree with most here about this law being, at best, unenforcible, and at worst a flagrant attempt to offer a false sense of security (security theater) to a public too ignorant (or lazy) to learn about their politicians, I do have to play devil's advocate a bit on the privacy issue..

How can one expect privacy posting in a public forum that is 'watched' by potentially thousands of people? In the 'real world', would any reasonable person expect privacy while having a conversation in the middle of Shea stadium on game day, while being taped? Probably not. The situation online is not so different, is it? Just because one is sitting in the relative safety/privacy of their home/business does not mean they should necessarily expect privacy when they engage in discourse on the internet.

The internet has created a medium where individuals CAN have some degree of anonymity while participating in a diverse range of activities, and (strictly in my opinion) that has been both a strength and a weakness. I can not honestly say that there could be SOME benefits to losing some of the anonymity of the net, though there is no chance I could see those benefits outweighing the massive drawbacks. Again, in no way do I support this 'law'.

Perhaps a rephrase from 'privacy' to 'personal safety', since that would be at risk (as I think someone mentioned already)

Sorry for the rambling diatribe, but claiming 'privacy' on a public forum on the net kind of made me chuckle, and in no way was this meant to offend or attack anyone, just offer a possible counter-perspective. This is a pretty interesting topic, especially given how pervasive the internet has become in the daily lives of so many people.

The US Supreme Court has rules that you have no right to "privacy" in public. Posting on the internet has been ruled as public.

I'll post my full name if these idiot politicians publish their private telephone numbers and their private addresses; Hell, while we're at it, I want to see their tax returns too.

Unless you are very good with a computer, it is almost impossible to hide. Everything you do online is tracked, your ISP is keeping everything you do. You have no privacy on a computer. The government have the equipment to be able to sit outside your house and track every keystroke you make on the computer. Your computer is not in a shielded box, so every keystroke is sending a signal. If you are using anything wireless, they can record and decode it.
