Allow the engine to idle 3 to 5 minutes before shutting it off after a full-load operation. This allows adequate cool down of pistons, cylinders, bearings, and turbocharger components.

Note the words full-load operation. while parking at the truckstop, that is not full-load operation.

Our regional manager says there is no excuse for idling so at 80,000 lbs. I start it, dump it in drive, and mash the pedal. If there is not enough P.S.I. to release the trailer brakes, just drag 'em till the air builds up.

And when the regional manager denies ever saying that at the time of your dismissal.....

In my old CAT 3126 the older it got the longer it needed to warm up even with the block heater, depending on the temperature I would give it any where from 10 to 20 minutes. Without the block heater at least 30 minutes. When my 2013 International wasn't in the shop it would take at least 20 minutes to warm up before It had any real power.

On my new Freightliner 106 I just get in and go. It's glorious.

if you're bobtail or pulling an empty, driving off after coolant gets above 100 f is the best bet, just easy on the throttle. when ambient temps are low, below 40 f, my truck will take near an hour to get coolant from 90 degrees to 150 degrees, that's just a lot of wasted fuel for no reason. if i'm bobtail or pulling an empty, the coolant won't barely get above 190 degrees anyways, even after being on the road for an hour.

letting the engine get to operating temp before use is to let the block expand and let all the hoses and connection temperatures settle, if you use it before the block can expand and the rubber warms up, there will be a lot of pressure on gaskets between material that isn't warm and expanded yet, that's how head gaskets and hoses get blown and you get internal coolant leaks.

problem is if the ambient temp is cold af, the engine won't hardly heat up if there's no load (compression) going on, so sitting there high idling just wastes fuel, better to get rolling so there's a load on the engine, but keep the RPMs low, and be gentle with the throttle until it gets to temp.

if loaded and you have room where you're getting on the road to roll slow and not be in the way, better to warm up while moving, but slowly

if loaded and coming out of a spot where the freeway entrance puts you at the bottom of Dante's Peak or you're having to jump into motorist white water, better let it get to temp before putting all that stress on it or you'll be blowing white smoke or squirting pink in no time.
