Warm-up procedures when starting from a cold start?

Idling a truck, even at high idle, is not good for it. The coolant may warm up, but the oil is still cold, and you will experience "wet stacking" in the cylinders. Additionally, your trans and rear axle oils are still cold, the only thing that will warm those up is "driving". Let it run long enough for oil to reach everything (the oil pressure sender is normally close to the oil pump and will show pressure before the oil has completely circulated). A minute or two is more than enough.

At 50 degrees fahrenheit? What about - 20.

Most can't do this, but I can warm my oil warmer than the coolant temperature by using a bit of pressure with the retarder, and my transmission will warm as well via the interface with coolant in the trans cooler. I'll take my chances waiting until the water temp gauge starts to move, and idled up, unless it's 90 degrees out before I start it. And then drive real easy if possible.

2 B models and a 6NZ, which is in our newest truck - a 2000 W900B dump truck. Both B models have retarders.

Are the new W900 trucks nice?
Are they much worse on fuel than say a T880 if powered the same way, for example Cummins X15 600 hp?
Thanks for letting me pick you brain.

I have no idea on anything newer than a 2000.

Doesn't take long to pick my brain! Lol

Nothing has been much different over the years as far as procedure. This is from a 1951 Cummins NH operating manual that came with a DIamond T.

Keep in mind that Oil pressure with straight 30wt. cold would be 80-100 psi and hot would be 45-65 at 500 rpm idle on those engines and they could idle all day long on a 100 degree day and not reach 140 degrees without the aid of radiator shutters.

Had S60, 12.7 from 500k to 1.8ml miles till sold. Idled ~800rpm (smoothest spot) all summer AC and all winter heater, starting at home and shutting down at home in extreme weather. Now have S60 1.25 ml miles, idling the same, never shut it down below 32F. I do ad Marvel and/or Lukas sometimes to have injectors clean and lubricated though.

Yeah, this is my gripe with HEUI engines - the way they use the oil to fire the injectors means that they tend to be the hardest to start (?) in cold weather.
