I am totally surprised seeing the great amount of drivers who place their warning triangles out improperly....

Carry the triangles with the reflective side toward the oncoming traffic when placing them, for your own safety. The other drivers will be able to see you.
Use your horn only when needed. Your horn can let others know you are there and can help avoid a collision. However, it can also startle others and could be dangerous if used unnecessarily.

I have seen this many times.

What is worse in my book is the cops that do the same things with their cones. They set them out at about a 45 degree angle from the back of their vehicle.

The setting if the triangle is still in the CDL manual and on the test.

And the if you are on the shoulder more than 10 minutes you are suppose to put your triangles out.

Laziness and I don't think it's necessary plays a big role. The 1 in a 100 you see placing them correctly is usually a new driver.
It's right there with pretrip inspections. :)

Seen a truck down on the shoulder of I 70 in Mo the other day, he was laying out triangles. But they were not open and laying them on the ground.:biggrin_25510:

when i put out triangles at night i also have 3 led flashing lights i put on the back of the trailer "can be seen about 3/4 of a miles away" 1 on the righ side (bottom of door) 2 in the left side (1 at bottom of door and 1 as high as i can reach)

last time i had to use them was for a jacked knifed truck. they were sitting sidways across the sholder and the right lane at night "bottom of middle sister I-80 WY" and had no light's on the trailer (pigtail was ripped out of the truck) all triangles at 100 yards from sholder to the zipper with cemlite (red) flairs under each put 1 led flasher at the center of trailer, 1 at the wheel's and 1 at the end of the trailer.

Lol, I just noticed Working Class Patriots bottom CA drawing is incorrect. They even tell you in writing the correct way. The artist messed up.

Even RickG's conflicts with the IL manual but looks more correct. All his measurements are off the tractor while IL the last 100' is off the second triangle which makes it 190' back.

If it was me measurements would be of each other so you wouldn't be walking back and forth. Just measure off each other and walk one straight line. Not that it makes a big difference. I'm just pointing out 3 states and 3 slightly different variations.
